Christian Gudegast: It was predominantly the state of the world. Initially, we were set to begin production, but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed everything. Following that setback, we faced an injury involving one of our lead actors, leading to further delays. We made plans to film in Belgrade and Croatia, but complications arose due to the Ukrainian conflict as it resulted in a surge of refugees, making accommodations for our crew nearly impossible. We also explored filming in France, but unfavorable currency exchange rates forced us to reconsider our locations. It was indeed a tumultuous journey, reflective of the many challenges presented by current production realities.

In contrast, comedic moments bring spontaneity and joy during filming, making them the highlight for me.
Given the runtime of over two and a half hours for both the first film and its sequel, did you encounter pressures to edit down content or advocate for certain scenes to remain?
Christian Gudegast: There’s always a tug-of-war regarding runtime, especially with studio requirements. In streaming formats, you can delve deeper into character exploration, but feature films have strict limits. Thankfully, as we continue to develop this franchise, we are afforded more space and time to develop the characters further. However, I did have to sacrifice some beloved scenes, which was disappointing but essential for the final narrative flow.

How do you balance the authentic tension during a prolonged heist sequence, considering music and editing contribute significantly to the final feel?
Christian Gudegast: It’s crucial that both actors and crew stay focused on the film’s essence during these complex sequences. We join many pieces together during post-production, drawing from various filming locations over extended timelines, making the collaborative effort essential. The tension truly crystallizes in the editing room.

Christian Gudegast: Absolutely.
