Overview
- The PlayStation 1 version of Tekken 3 remains largely confined to the original console.
- Although several Tekken titles are accessible on PS5, Tekken 3 is disappointingly missing.
- Fans are eager for a re-release of Tekken 3 on contemporary gaming platforms.
Despite being widely celebrated and ranked as the 23rd highest-rated video game of all time, Tekken 3 is virtually isolated to the PlayStation 1. Initially launched in arcades in 1997, it made its PlayStation debut in 1998. The nostalgia surrounding the PS1 version remains strong, yet accessing it today poses a considerable challenge.
This iconic title is essentially anchored to its original console plus the PlayStation Classic mini console. While players can relive the arcade experience of Tekken 3 through Tekken 5 on the PS2, the PS1 version is hard to locate. Many fans are left with the option of either purchasing the somewhat controversial PS1 Classic console or hunting down vintage copies for their PS1, PS2, or PS3 systems. Unfortunately, Tekken 3’s availability on modern consoles such as the PS5 has not yet materialized.
Why Tekken 3 Should Be Available on Modern Platforms
The ongoing unavailability of Tekken 3 on modern consoles is puzzling, though hopeful signs hint toward potential future re-releases. The presence of Tekken 2 on the PS Plus Premium service suggests that Bandai Namco is open to the idea of reviving classic titles. The inclusion of Tekken 3 in their PS1 Classic catalog indicates a willingness to explore its reimagining for modern audiences.
Moreover, Tekken is not the only enduring franchise facing similar challenges, as many titles from the series remain exclusive to older platforms. With 2025 marking the 30th anniversary of Tekken’s debut on PlayStation, Bandai Namco has an ideal opportunity to celebrate this milestone by enabling fans to experience all classic entries, including Tekken 3. Meanwhile, fans can anticipate exciting updates for the latest installment, Tekken 8.
