Diving into Dexter’s Origins: A Look at Dexter: Original Sin
After nearly twenty years since Dexter Morgan first captivated audiences, his backstory is vividly explored in the prequel series Dexter: Original Sin. Set in Miami in 1991, the show takes place fifteen years prior to the original series and presents a 20-year-old Dexter, portrayed by Patrick Gibson (known for roles in The OA and Shadow and Bone). This prequel chronicles Dexter’s initial forays into murder as he struggles to assimilate among the everyday citizens of Miami who lack his dark impulses. Although the series introduces a fresh cast in these familiar roles, the original Dexter himself, Michael C. Hall, features in the pilot episode and lends his narrative voice throughout the series.
Renowned showrunner Clyde Phillips continues to spearhead the franchise, overseeing both Original Sin and the forthcoming series Dexter: Resurrection. This sequel brings Hall back as the iconic lead, ensuring that fans of the franchise will be thoroughly engaged with both Dexter’s beginnings and his unpredictable future.
Insights from Clyde Phillips: Expanding the Dexter Universe
In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Clyde Phillips shared his thoughts on the evolution of the Dexter universe, discussing the mixed reactions to the conclusion of Dexter: New Blood and the rationale behind the simultaneous development of multiple new Dexter series.
Clyde Phillips: Yeah, they’re starting to call it “The Dexterverse.”
ScreenRant’s inquiry about the watchword “Dexterpalooza”drew a playful response:
Clyde Phillips: Sure. We’ll go with you.
A Closer Look at the Decisions Behind Dexter’s Fate
As fans grappled with the ending of New Blood, many wondered about the choice to kill off the beloved character only to see his return. Phillips elaborated on these controversial turns:
Clyde Phillips: The way New Blood worked is, what I wanted to say to social media because… They went crazy when Dexter was shot, which just showed me how much they loved the character and loved the show. But at that time, I only had Michael C. Hall for one year, so I had to end the show. And then it turned out that the finale, which I was privileged enough to write, was the most watched episode in the history of Showtime. And Showtime immediately ordered a sequel, for which I got my writers back together.
…Then Chris McCarthy from MTV Entertainment and Paramount came along and said, “I don’t believe in sequels. I want to do a prequel. Can you come up with a prequel?”And so I did.
Distinct from the threads of Resurrection, Phillips emphasized that this new chapter is an entirely fresh narrative.
Clyde Phillips: It’s a whole new show.
The Quasi-Reboot Nature of Dexter: Original Sin
Discussing the unique challenge of creating a prequel, Phillips reflected on the struggle for young Dexter to navigate his identity:
Clyde Phillips: He’s 20 years old, a college student, socially awkward, never kissed a girl, doesn’t know how to hug his own sister. Yet he is fated to be a serial killer.
This new portrayal offers viewers a glimpse into Dexter’s formative years, contrasting sharply with the seasoned killer they first met in the original series:
Clyde Phillips: Here, this guy, Patrick Gibson, young Dexter, has no idea how to play the game and we get to watch that happen.
