In the middle of the main storyline in Dragon Quest 3 Remake, players encounter a series of pivotal challenges that are essential for progressing the narrative. Following the defeat of the Boss Troll in Manoza, you’ll be presented with three crucial objectives, all revolving around the acquisition of key items: the Boatman’s Bone, the Lovers’ Locket, and the Mountaincleaver sword.
Both the Boatman’s Bone and the Lovers’ Locket are tied to the Ghost Ship, and they, along with the Mod Rod, play a significant role in reaching the Shrine of Shackles to retrieve the Mountaincleaver. Therefore, it’s logical to explore these tasks simultaneously. In this guide, we’ll provide detailed instructions on how to acquire the Boatman’s Bone, Lovers’ Locket, and Mountaincleaver in Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake.
How to Acquire the Mod Rod in Dragon Quest 3 Remake
Before pursuing the Boatman’s Bone and Lovers’ Locket, it’s imperative to first obtain the Mod Rod. This unique staff not only has the ability to alter the entire party’s appearance but also serves a significant purpose in trading. To acquire it, players must successfully complete the quests within DQIII Remake’s Manoza Castle and Caves.
After overcoming the Boss Troll, you will be rewarded with the Mod Rod from the King of Manoza. Additionally, you’ll receive a cryptic vision that presents three crucial hints about your upcoming challenges. The vision features an elderly man with a magical staff, an item resembling a bone paired with a phantom ship, and a sword alongside a volcano. The Mod Rod is your key to unlocking the first clue and ultimately obtaining the Boatman’s Bone.
How to Acquire the Boatman’s Bone in Dragon Quest 3 Remake
After securing the Mod Rod, your next objective is to travel to an NPC residing on the small island in the northeastern part of the world map, known as Grimland in the HD-2D Remake. This area has been referred to by various names in earlier versions but serves the same purpose.
To reach this “village,”sail towards the center of the southern side of the island and disembark. The NPC you are looking for is situated in a hut located in the northeast corner of Grimland village. Speak with the old man inside, and he will exchange the Boatman’s Bone for your Mod Rod.
If you’re worried about losing the Mod Rod, there’s no need to fret. Players can obtain a second Mod Rod later in the game as a reward for completing Rank 10 in the secret Jipang Monster Arena.
With the Boatman’s Bone in hand, the location of the Ghost Ship will be revealed on your map, signaling your next destination.
Ghost Ship Lovers’ Locket Walkthrough – Dragon Quest 3 Remake
Finding the Ghost Ship:
With the Boatman’s Bone secured, the Ghost Ship is now visible on your map. Some players have suggested that the ship moves, but in our examination, it remained stationary throughout.
In Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, the Ghost Ship is positioned in the expansive bay north of the Pyramid. By checking your map, you should see the dark purple vessel situated in the southeast corner of the bay. Utilize the Zoom ability to get to the Pyramid, then navigate your ship to the northeast towards the Ghost Ship. You’ll be prompted to board once you are in proximity.
Ghost Ship Deck 1 Walkthrough:
Upon entering the Ghost Ship, head north along the ship’s western edge to encounter Tenda, one of DQIII Remake’s Friendly Monsters. To the right of Tenda, you will find a treasure barrel.
Proceed to the southern part of the ship where you will discover another treasure barrel located in the lower east side, alongside a treasure pot positioned on the upper east side. You can reach this upper level by scaling the stairs on the eastern deck. After collecting the treasures on Deck 1, head down the stairs to Deck 2.
How to Obtain the Lovers’ Locket – Ghost Ship Deck 2 Walkthrough:
Descend via the stairs located in the center or southwest corner of the ship to reach Deck 2. On this level, you will find numerous valuable items, particularly the Lovers’ Locket. Locate this item at the southern end of Deck 2 within a wooden box, identifiable by its distinctive ‘sparkle’.
Deck 2 also features a treasure room, clearly marked on the map with a yellow line adjacent to the door. Make sure to grab the Mini Medal hidden in a barrel behind the chests, along with gold coins from the pot.
On the northeast end of the ship, you will encounter the second Friendly Monster, Hades. Once you’ve secured the Lovers’ Locket, you are now prepared to leave and head to the Shrine of Shackles to embark on your quest for the Mountaincleaver.
How to Find the Mountaincleaver in Dragon Quest 3 Remake
With the Lovers’ Locket now in your possession, you are ready to access the previously unreachable area encompassing the Mountaincleaver. Your target location is the Shrine of Shackles.
Reaching the Shrine of Shackles:
To locate the Shrine of Shackles, sail north of Olivia’s Promontory. There exists a river inlet obstructed by a magical barrier, which you will not be able to cross without the Lovers’ Locket. Attempting to do so without it will repel you back.
Once you approach the magical barrier while possessing the Lovers’ Locket, a significant cutscene will unfold. Afterward, navigate directly west to discover the island housing the Shrine of Shackles, which will be visible.
Obtaining the Mountaincleaver:
Upon entering the shrine, you will notice several jail cells within. Begin by approaching the southwestern cell to engage with the spirit NPC, followed by another detailed cutscene. Next, shift your attention to the southeastern cell and search the remains of a skeleton within, where you will ultimately find the renowned Mountaincleaver sword. Fortunately, there are no adversaries or bosses present within the Shrine of Shackles.
You are free to utilize the Mountaincleaver at your discretion. However, its true potential will be revealed as you progress to Mt. Necrogond, marking the commencement of your quest to acquire the Silver Orb from the Necrogond Shrine.
