Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Battle of Jakku – Republic Under Siege #4.
As the Battle of Jakku series continues to unfold, I find myself growing increasingly concerned about potential missteps in how this iconic storyline concludes. This captivating comic series, structured into three arcs with four issues each, is nearing the release of its final arc, yet disappointingly, we have yet to witness the actual battle on the planet Jakku.
Building Anticipation for Jakku
The Narrative Context: Between ROTJ and the Final Formation of the Galactic Civil War
The Marvel Comics series, beginning with “Insurgency Rising,”has provided valuable insights into the post-Endor Star Wars landscape. It introduces Governor Adelhard, who astonishingly appoints himself as a Grand Moff while persistently ignoring the Imperial defeats. Instead of cooperating with fellow leaders, he fortifies an “Iron Blockade”around the Anoat Sector. Concurrently, we see Luke Skywalker grappling with the dark side cult, the Acolytes of the Beyond, in his quest for Jedi relics aimed at resurrecting the Jedi Order.
Luke’s conflicts extend to Adelhard, who eventually teams up with the Acolytes during the second arc, titled “Republic Under Siege.”However, Adelhard’s aspirations of establishing a New Empire are thwarted when he is betrayed by Reyna Oskure, a powerful faction leader among the Acolytes. This betrayal culminates in Adelhard’s demise on a desolate planet, abandoned by those he once commanded.
Throughout these arcs, connections with other Star Wars media and novels set during the same time frame have been subtly woven in. Notable mentions include Gallius Rax, a fervent loyalist to the Emperor, as he executes clandestine operations like Cinder while the Imperial Navy gathers forces over Jakku. Yet, despite these rich narratives, the planet Jakku’s presence remains sparse compared to the focus on Adelhard and the Acolytes.
Concerns About the Title’s Representation
Evaluating the Actual Focus on Jakku
The events chronicled in the initial arcs occur during the timeline between the Battle of Endor and the actual Battle of Jakku, casting uncertainty on how sufficiently the final arc, “Last Stand,”will address the impending conflict. Recent previews for “Last Stand #1″have raised alarms, suggesting that the focus may dwindle in the immediate moments leading up to Jakku’s monumental battle, as hints reveal Adelhard is still alive, diverting attention to Acolyte offensives against primary New Republic territories, such as Chandrila.
As we await these crucial developments, the specific roles of iconic characters like Luke, Leia, and Han Solo during the Battle of Jakku remain tantalizingly unexamined.
Mark your calendars! Star Wars: Battle of Jakku – Last Stand #1 hits the shelves on December 25th.
