The Time Gap: Mistborn Era 3 Positioned 50 Years After Era 2
Insights on the Ghostbloods Timeline
As detailed in the State of Sanderson announcements, the upcoming series will reintroduce some beloved characters from Era One, described as “somewhat spike-filled.”Sanderson clarified that this new saga will explore the Ghostbloods’ endeavors on Scadrial, situated about fifty years after Era 2—correcting earlier estimates of 70 to 80 years. Notably, “spike-filled characters”refer to Kelsier and Marsh, who survived the events of Era 1 and have made cameo appearances in Era 2 as well as across the broader Cosmere.
For those still unclear about Kelsier’s return, the novella Mistborn: Secret History provides valuable context!
The Implications of Ghostbloods on the Overall Mistborn Narrative
Continuity between Mistborn Eras 2 & 3
With Era 3 taking place 50 years post-Era 2, approximately 400 years will separate it from the events chronicled in The Hero of Ages. In terms of technological advancement and world-building on Scadrial, Ghostbloods is poised to reflect a continuity more akin to Era 2, contrasting with the more drastic shifts observed in previous eras. Notably, Sanderson hinted at the emergence of early computer technology, as well as a potential Cold War plotline brewing between Northern and Southern Scadrial.
The reduced time gap also suggests that characters from Mistborn Era 2 could still wield significant influence in society. For instance, Marasi may still be alive, albeit in her 80s, while Wax and Wayne may have grown into revered historical figures. Unlike Vin, who slipped into the realm of legend, these characters will likely remain celebrated for their enduring legacies.
