What This Means for Wicked
The Musical’s Ongoing Success
The timing of the home release couldn’t be better, coinciding with the concluding phase of Wicked’s blockbuster box office run. It has set a remarkable record, surpassing the 1978 classic Grease as the highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation in U.S. history with total earnings over $575 million globally. Given its production budget of around $150 million, its breakeven point has comfortably been surpassed.
Currently, Wicked holds the title of the second highest-grossing Broadway musical adaptation worldwide, following Mamma Mia!‘s $609.9 million success.
The home release is poised to enhance the movie’s profitability by launching during a holiday weekend with limited new competition in theaters. While the competitive landscape heats up with awards season titles debuting on Christmas Day, the absence of major releases on New Year’s Eve and the following weekend allows Wicked to capture viewer attention as the new year unfolds.
Our Perspective on the Wicked Home Release
Seamless Transition into the 2025 Sequel
This strategic home release of Wicked perfectly aligns with the upcoming film sequel, Wicked: For Good, set to premiere in theaters on November 21, 2025. Having the first half accessible for home viewing throughout 2025 will attract a broader audience and offer existing fans the opportunity to revisit the story, thereby generating sustained interest leading up to the sequel’s much-anticipated release.
