Essential Insights
- Production of Avengers: Doomsday is set to commence in Spring 2025, with a planned release in 2026.
- Doctor Doom will serve as the primary antagonist, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.
- Unlike Infinity War and Endgame, Avengers 5 & 6 will not be filmed consecutively.
The upcoming installment of the Avengers series is expected to have significant consequences for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as it will conclude the Multiverse Saga and feature the return of numerous iconic heroes (and some villains). Recent announcements regarding Avengers: Doomsday have provided further clarity on its production timeline.
The double feature of new Avengers films was officially announced at Marvel Studios’ Comic-Con presentation in 2022. Initially, the Multiverse Saga focused on the villain, Kang the Conqueror, with Avengers 5 titled The Kang Dynasty and its sequel, Avengers 6, referred to as Secret Wars. However, following the arrest of Kang’s actor, Jonathan Majors, Marvel decided to pivot from the character. At Comic-Con 2024, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige announced that the acclaimed directors Joe and Anthony Russo will return to direct the rebranded Avengers 5, now named Avengers: Doomsday.
Start Date for Avengers 5 Filming Announced
Despite several Marvel films debuting before Avengers 5, insights into the filming schedule have emerged. During a discussion with Collider at New York Comic-Con, the Russo brothers revealed that production for Avengers: Doomsday will kick off in Spring 2025. They also mentioned that the two forthcoming Avengers features would not follow the same back-to-back filming approach taken for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. “While these films won’t be separated as distinctly as typically expected, they will have a more significant gap, roughly a year apart, compared to Infinity War and Endgame,” Anthony Russo clarified.
The release timeline for Marvel’s next two Avengers films is as follows:
- Avengers: Doomsday: Scheduled for May 1, 2026
- Avengers: Secret Wars: Set for May 7, 2027
With production beginning in Spring 2025, Avengers: Doomsday will have approximately 12 months allocated to complete filming, conduct reshoots, and finalize post-production ahead of its 2026 launch. It’s anticipated that the Russo brothers may simultaneously begin working on the sixth Avengers film, creating a busy schedule for the duo.
During the Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con, several critical details about Avengers: Doomsday were revealed, including that Doctor Doom will be the primary villain, portrayed by none other than Robert Downey Jr., famously known for playing Iron Man. The Russo brothers expressed their vision for both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars to “deliver the most exceptional cinematic experience for audiences.”
The confirmed cast for the fifth Avengers film, alongside Robert Downey Jr., includes the members of the Fantastic Four, featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. This iconic superhero team will debut in their standalone film, Fantastic Four, which is set to premiere on July 25, 2025. Given Victor von Doom’s longstanding rivalry with the Fantastic Four, speculation suggests that Downey Jr. might appear in that film prior to Avengers 5.
Avengers: Doomsday is slated for release on May 1, 2026.
