Continuing the Legacy of One Tree Hill: Insights on the Sequel Show and Possible Returning Characters from the Star

Hilarie Burton, celebrated for her role in One Tree Hill, recently shared insights into the upcoming Netflix sequel of the beloved series. Announced in August, the revival has generated much excitement among fans. Burton, alongside co-star Sophia Bush, will not only reprise their iconic roles as Brooke Davis and Peyton Sawyer but is also taking on the role of executive producer. The team is joined by Becky Hartman Edwards, who is set to be the showrunner for the project. However, specific details regarding the show remain under wraps.

In a recent interview with Grant Hermanns from Screen Rant, Burton discussed her anticipation for the revival while promoting her upcoming horror film Bloody Axe Wound, which premieres on December 27 on Shudder. She commended Edwards’ extensive experience and her adept management of the creative team, while also emphasizing that the revival has not yet been officially greenlit. Burton hinted at the nostalgic return to Wilmington, North Carolina, a location integral to the original series, while expressing hopes for creating something fresh for new audiences:

We were very, very lucky that we got a showrunner, Becky Hartman Edwards, who is so experienced, and her ability to connect with her writers room, the people on set, all the actors, she is magical at that. So, we get to be hands off in that capacity and really be more on the business side of things. You know, “How are we going to go back to Wilmington, North Carolina, and have it feel like the good old days, but also be new and fresh for a brand new audience?”So, we’re in the very, very, very early stages. Nothing is greenlit at this point, but I know it’s being presented, and I believe in it, and I’m proud of it, and I love that family of people, so fingers crossed. If it goes, I think everyone will be in a really good place.

The revival project is being developed by Warner Bros. TV, with Jensen Ackles and Danneel Ackles serving as executive producers under their Chaos Machine production banner. The initial interest in reviving One Tree Hill follows Netflix’s success with a limited series revival of Gilmore Girls. Nonetheless, while Burton’s statements exude optimism, they also serve as a reminder of the project’s current precarious status.

As new updates emerge, speculation about which former co-stars might return alongside Burton and Bush will likely evolve. The revival is still in early stages, leaving room for Netflix to eventually reconsider its commitment to the sequel. However, initial progress suggests that the follow-up series has promising potential to carve out new narratives while nurturing nostalgic elements.

A New Era for a New Generation

The original One Tree Hill captivated audiences for nine seasons with a total of 187 episodes, transitioning successfully from The WB to The CW. The potential for the new sequel to explore the evolving dynamics in both character development and the television landscape since its conclusion in 2012 presents a unique opportunity. By examining changes over time, the series could transcend the typical reboot narrative, offering a fresh and meaningful continuation for its legacy.
