Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence has officially assured fans that the upcoming revival will not erase the significant events of season 9. After a period of much speculation, it is confirmed that a revival of Scrubs is in the works at ABC and 20th Television. While details are still emerging, original cast members, including Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and John C. McGinley, are anticipated to reprise their beloved roles in some capacity.
In a recent discussion with TVLine, Lawrence stated clearly that the revival will acknowledge, rather than retcon, the events of Scrubs season 9, which introduced a largely fresh ensemble of characters. He praised the performances from that season and expressed interest in potentially bringing back some actors from that era. He also hinted at featuring new interns in the upcoming episodes:
I thought some of those actors and actresses were really starting to find their footing. Kerry Bishé, [Michael] Mosley, Dave Franco… they’re all still working for a reason. They’re all very good. I’m not against seeing those people [again], and I think it would be fun to have one of them zip by, but that spinoff, if you remember, was supposed to be a med school, and those people that were going through it would then go off into the world and land as physicians in places here, there, everywhere. What I think we will really be focusing on is a place where some of our core regulars still work as physicians. And who are the new interns or residents at that hospital?
Understanding Scrubs Season 9 and Its Impact on the Revival
The Implications Are Significant
Season 9 of Scrubs remains a polarizing series of episodes, primarily due to the shift in focus it introduced. It centered around a new cast while retaining only Faison and McGinley as the main characters, though many original actors made guest appearances. Notably, Judy Reyes, who portrayed Carla Espinosa, did not return for this final season but is expected to play a role in the revival.
The narrative pivot aimed to spotlight a new generation of medical interns portrayed by Dave Franco, Eliza Coupe, Michael Mosley, and Kerry Bishé, which ultimately did not resonate well with audiences and led to the show’s conclusion.
Lawrence, who’s also promoting season 2 of his Apple TV+ series Shrinking, emphasizes that the new series will place a greater emphasis on the original characters without disregarding the events of the final season. This acknowledgment includes the significant narrative point that the iconic Sacred Heart Hospital has been demolished, while leaving room for possible cameos from the newer cast members.
Perspectives on the Scrubs Revival and Its Retcon Decisions
Examining Other Revivals
Shows such as Roseanne and Will & Grace have recently navigated similar revival waters by either ignoring or altering the circumstances of their original series finales. Whether this approach proves successful for Scrubs will largely hinge on the audience’s ongoing desire to reconnect with JD, Turk, and the rest of the memorable characters after all this time. Given the passage of years since season 9, it might be refreshing for the revival to explore the later characters’ journeys as well.
