Creature Commandos Episode 5 Review: Exploring Frankenstein’s Dark Legacy in the DCU’s Most Twisted Journey

The animated series Creature Commandos continues to captivate audiences with its blend of humor and dark themes. Episode 5, titled “The Iron Pot,”delves deeper into the shadows, offering a stark portrayal of Frankenstein as he navigates his tumultuous relationships and confronts his past. While this episode maintains the show’s established formula of introducing new leads, it ultimately serves up darker themes that elevate the overall narrative.

In this episode, Frankenstein teams up with Rick Flagg Sr. to investigate the reliability of Circe’s ominous vision. Meanwhile, The Bride leads the rest of Task Force M on a mission in the fictional region of Pokolistan. As the plot progresses to present-day events, viewers gain a greater understanding of Frankenstein’s grim origins, showcasing a character more brutal and fractured than ever before.

Voiced by David Harbour, Frankenstein is a standout character in Creature Commandos, combining humor and depth. However, this episode reveals a significantly darker aspect of his persona, where his comedic nature is overshadowed by a newfound sense of righteousness that borders on the sinister. As a result, the character shifts from being a source of comic relief to one with menacing undertones, leaving audiences with a chilling perspective on his actions.

Episode 5 also features high-octane action sequences, particularly showcasing Doctor Phosphorous, who previously had limited screen time. The dynamic duo of Rick and Frankenstein uncovers pertinent developments that propel the story forward, yet the overall pacing of the episode feels stagnated. Despite offering engaging moments, the episode primarily rehashes plot elements introduced earlier, introducing only a single significant twist by its conclusion.

The narrative complexity deepens as characters with hidden motives intersect and diverge in unforeseen ways. The perceived monsters—The Bride, Phosphorous, Weasel, and Nina Mazursky—each grapple with their roles in the ongoing conflict. As the series unfolds, viewers witness more morally ambiguous behavior from the characters rather than clear delineations of right and wrong.

Princess Ilana and Circe, among others, introduce further layers of personal intention, complicating the audience’s ability to discern heroes from villains. The series effectively challenges viewers to reconsider the traditional definitions of monstrosity by illustrating characters whose actions—or lack thereof—dictate their morality, rather than their appearances.

As the season approaches its climax with only two episodes remaining, the question looms: Can the narrative threads be tied up satisfactorily? Given Gunn’s previous successes in storytelling, there is optimism that the concluding episodes of Creature Commandos will deliver a compelling resolution.

New episodes of Creature Commandos premiere weekly on Max every Thursday.
