Attention: Spoilers Ahead for Outlander Season 7, Episode 11!
Adapting Outlander: A Mixed Bag in Season 7
Outlander season 7 has made notable adjustments to accommodate significant differences between the book series and its television adaptation. As the story nears its conclusion, these alterations are becoming more apparent, often leading to unexpected implications. In this adaptation journey, what might initially appear as a minor shift can grow into a more substantial issue. While the series has generally handled its changes with some finesse, it seems that the writers may have opted for a more straightforward approach this season.
William Ransom’s Revelatory Moment
In season 7, episode 11, viewers witness a pivotal moment: William Ransom uncovers the truth about his father, James Fraser. Anticipation swirled around this scene, as the television adaptation diverges significantly from Diana Gabaldon’s literary work. In the original narrative, William recognizes Jamie as his father upon first seeing him as an adult, noting their striking resemblance. Conversely, in the series, the characters have met multiple times prior, making this reveal a challenge to portray effectively. Unfortunately, the solution offered in season 7 felt somewhat contrived.
The Unnatural Reveal
Lord John’s Awkward Dialogue
The context of Lord John Grey’s dialogue raised eyebrows as he breaks the news to Jamie about William’s arrival. Just after Jamie shares a tender moment with Claire, Lord John announces, “Your son is due home shortly.“Jamie’s surprised response, “William? He’s here?”signaled that something was off. This moment prompted the question of why Lord John chose to specify “your son,”instead of simply referring to William by name. Clearly, this line served a narrative purpose—setting the stage for William to overhear their conversation from outside.
Such dialogue seemed uncharacteristic for Lord John, who had previously made no secret of William’s parentage. This deviation felt disjointed, merely a plot device to expedite the narrative concerning the change from the book.
Room for Improvement in Adaptation
Exploring Alternative Approaches
Given that William had already established a relationship with Jamie through previous encounters, it presented an opportunity for a more gradual revelation. His emotional connection to Jamie’s rosary beads—gifts from Ian in this adaptation—hints at a deeper understanding of their linkage. A more nuanced exploration could have offered a richer viewing experience rather than relying on hasty dialogue. With the episodes ahead in season 7, there’s hope that the repercussions of William’s realization will be handled with greater depth and care.
New episodes of Outlander season 7 air weekly on Starz at 8:00 PM EST.
