Lewis Lent is a convicted murderer known for the heinous killings of two young children in Massachusetts and New York, including the case of 12-year-old Sara Anne Wood, whose remains remain undiscovered to this day.
CBS’s 48 Hours will delve into the case of Sara Anne Wood’s tragic murder in its forthcoming episode titled The Unending Search for Sara Anne Wood, scheduled to air on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at 10 p.m. ET on CBS, and will also be available for streaming on Paramount Plus.
Who is Lewis Lent and what is his current status?
Sara Anne Wood was just 12 years old when she was last seen heading home from Vacation Bible School in the rural region of Sauquoit, New York, in August 1993. When Sara failed to return, her family took to searching for her. Later that day, her bicycle was found by a neighbor, concealed in a bush along the road, approximately half a mile from the Wood residence.
Five months after Sara’s disappearance, an attempted abduction took place in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, where 12-year-old Becky Savarese was targeted while walking to school. Becky fled and reported the incident, which led police to question a 43-year-old man named Lewis Lent.
Lent informed authorities that he had previously worked as a part-time janitor at the Pittsfield Plaza Cinema Center, the last known location of 12-year-old Jimmy Bernardo before he was found murdered in 1990. Suspicions arose regarding Lent’s involvement, resulting in his arrest concerning Becky Savarese’s attempted abduction.
Following several hours of interrogation, Lewis Lent confessed to the murders of both Sara Wood and Jimmy Bernardo. He disclosed disturbing details about his “master plan,” revealing that he was constructing a large wooden partition in his bedroom to confine his victims after abducting them.
Lent was sentenced to 25 years to life imprisonment for the kidnapping and murder of Sara Anne Wood and is currently serving his sentence in Massachusetts. He received an additional life sentence without the possibility of parole for the murder and abduction of Jimmy Bernardo, along with a sentence of 17 to 20 years for the attempted kidnapping of Becky Savarese.
He remains incarcerated in Massachusetts, and New York State Police investigators continue to engage with him in hopes of extracting information regarding the location of Sara Anne Wood’s burial site.
