Recent Developments in Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars Journey
- Daisy Ridley’s upcoming Star Wars film faces challenges due to a departing screenwriter.
- This delay may push filming back to 2025.
- Fans are eager to witness Rey’s story as she attempts to establish a new Jedi Academy.
Daisy Ridley is set to return to the Star Wars universe, a prospect that has stirred excitement among fans. However, recent reports indicate that the production of her inaugural film as Rey has encountered significant obstacles.
Since her debut in 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Ridley has portrayed Rey, a character born from humble beginnings as a scavenger on Jakku. She reprised her iconic role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, it was officially announced that Ridley would reprise her role in a new film, yet developments on the production have been sparse, leading to doubts about its timeline.
As reported by Variety, the film has recently lost its latest screenwriter, Steven Knight. Knight was initially brought on board in March 2023, taking over from writers Damond Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. With Knight’s departure, the project is currently without a screenwriter, and Lucasfilm is actively seeking new talent to continue Rey’s narrative, focusing on her endeavor to establish a Jedi Academy. This situation raises concerns that filming may not commence until 2025.

Despite the writing challenges, director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, known for her work on the Disney Plus series Ms. Marvel, remains committed to the film. In discussions with Variety, she expressed a strong interest in exploring Rey’s evolution as a female Jedi, aiming to convey her unique experiences in the story. She further indicated that Rey’s journey would involve significant adventures tied to the Jedi Academy while emphasizing that the development process aims for thoughtful storytelling rather than rushing the project.
Before this setback, doubts surrounding the film’s production had surfaced, with some insiders skeptical about its viability. Jordan Ruimy, editor-in-chief of World of Reel, was quoted saying that he believed the chances of filming in September were minimal, suggesting instead that the project might ultimately be abandoned. Meanwhile, credible sources like @DanielRPK commented that the anticipated film, The New Jedi Order, is currently on hold pending script revisions.
Regardless of the evolving circumstances, excitement continues to grow within the Star Wars fandom, as Rey represents a pivotal character in the saga. Fans are longing to see the next chapter of her journey beyond the events of The Rise of Skywalker, hoping that the forthcoming film will delve deeper into her character and the complexities of rebuilding the Jedi Order.
For those eager to revisit the Star Wars saga, all previous films are available for streaming on Disney Plus.
