Understanding Location-Bound Spirits in Dandadan

Within the captivating storyline of Dandadan, Momo and Okarun encounter various spiritual anomalies, among which Location-Bound Spirits, or Earthbound Spirits, play a pivotal role. These spirits represent the lingering souls of deceased individuals who have remained in the realm of the living due to unresolved issues. Typically invisible to the untrained eye, they can only be perceived by those with heightened spiritual sensitivity.

The world of Dandadan is brimming with cryptic entities, including not just Spirits but also extraterrestrial beings and Cryptids, each with distinct characteristics and classifications. So, what truly distinguishes Location-Bound Spirits from their counterparts?

Distinct Characteristics of Location-Bound Spirits

Attachment to Significant Locations

Seiko and the Spirit Crab

Location-Bound Spirits are categorized into three main types within the premise of Dandadan: Earthbound Spirits, Yokai, and Guardian Spirits. True to their name, Location-Bound Spirits are tethered to specific sites that held deep significance during their time as living beings.

While operating within their designated territories, these spirits possess formidable power, rendering them virtually invincible. Even renowned Spirit Mediums like Seiko Ayase face insurmountable challenges when attempting to exorcise these spirits while they remain in their domain. Unlike the more malevolent Yokai, Location-Bound Spirits are not inherently evil; they typically pose no threat unless their territory is violated by intruders.

Transgressing into their domain with disrespect can have dire consequences, establishing a delicate balance in the coexistence of the living and the dead.

Fusion of Spirits for Enhanced Power

Turbo Granny Fused with Spirit Crab

A fascinating aspect of these spirits is their ability to fuse with one another through a pact, resulting in a new, more potent entity that combines their strengths. In Episode 4, titled “Kicking Turbo Granny’s Ass”, we see Turbo Granny form a fusion with the Earthbound Spirit Crab, creating a fearsome hybrid that merges the strength of the crab with the speed of Turbo Granny.

However, such fusions can come with drawbacks. For instance, Turbo Granny, originally capable of wreaking havoc across Japan, becomes bound specifically to Shono City once fused with the Spirit Crab, limiting her domain.

The Earthbound Spirit Crab is the first significant Location-Bound Spirit encountered by Momo and Okarun. This formidable spirit is chained to a tunnel in Shono City, taking the terrifying form of a giant crab decorated with faces on its shell and multiple mouths along its underbelly. The horrid origin of this spirit is rooted in the tragic fates of several young girls who were murdered in this tunnel, their souls intertwined with the crab’s essence.

Despite primarily residing in the tunnel, its influence extends over the entirety of Shono City, making it a nearly unstoppable force in that region. To complicate matters, the Spirit Crab’s fusion with Turbo Granny amplifies its powers, preventing even a seasoned medium like Seiko Ayase from accessing the tunnel when the spirit resides there. This limitation is exacerbated by Seiko’s own weakened state, as she draws power from the gods, whose jurisdiction does not cover Shono City.

To exorcise this formidable spirit, Momo and Okarun devise a plan to lure it towards the boundaries between Shono City and Kamigoe City. They board a train heading to Kamigoe City while the Spirit Crab pursues them. Momo skillfully employs her psychokinesis to immobilize the spirit just as they cross into Kamigoe City, where Seiko has strategically prepared a trap for the exorcism.

The Earthbound Spirit Crab’s appearance bears a striking resemblance to the Heikegani, a real crab species recognized for having a shell pattern that resembles a human face, particularly that of an angered samurai.

Identifying Weaknesses of Location-Bound Spirits

Exposing Vulnerabilities Outside Their Territory

While Location-Bound Spirits in Dandadan are nearly invincible within their territories, they become significantly weaker once they step outside. This shift renders them vulnerable to exorcism, akin to any other spirit. Therefore, even if a spirit cannot be exorcised right away, its power diminishes outside its familiar zone, making it easier to handle, evade, or confront.

In addition to their general vulnerabilities when outside their territory, these spirits often possess specific weaknesses unique to each entity. For instance, Momo discovers that the Earthbound Spirit Crab is sensitive to hot water, a clever deduction based on her understanding of how crab meat reacts when boiled. She successfully uses hot water from a bathhouse to slow the spirit’s advance, demonstrating that even within Shono City, its power could be temporarily hindered.

Dandadan can be streamed on various platforms, including Crunchyroll, Netflix, Muse Asia, and others. Don’t miss the next episode, set to release on November 7, 2024, at 9:00 AM PT.
