Had David Ayer’s Suicide Squad 2 come to fruition, fans would have been treated to an unexpected twist involving one of the original cast members from the 2016 film. Despite achieving relative financial success within the DCEU, the follow-up to Suicide Squad never materialized under Ayer’s direction. Instead, the project transitioned to James Gunn, who introduced The Suicide Squad, blending elements from the original movie with a host of fresh characters. However, questions linger about Ayer’s original vision for the sequel.
In a recent interview with Scott Eastwood, conducted by Liam Crowley of ScreenRant, the spotlight shifted to Eastwood’s brief but notable role in 2016’s Suicide Squad, where he portrayed the character GQ Edwards. There has been speculation regarding whether Eastwood was intended to embody a well-known DC character. In a surprising revelation, Eastwood shared that his character was meant to undergo a significant transformation for a potential sequel.
Liam Crowley: It’s cool to see you in the lead role as well because my introduction to you, Scott, was eight years ago in your supporting role in Suicide Squad with David Ayer. I don’t know how online you are when it comes to people talking about films in anticipation, but Lieutenant GQ, everyone thought you were going to be secretly Dick Grayson. Did that rumor ever make it back to you? You ever hear about that?
Scott Eastwood: I know that there was talk about making me into another character and coming back. It just… David Ayer didn’t direct that next film then. I was like, ‘Look, let’s just see. Let’s see what the next thing holds. Is it a cool character? Who is it?’ And that never came around because he didn’t direct the film, so it was a different movie.
Liam Crowley: Would we have known more about your character in his director’s cut?
Scott Eastwood: I think so. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen his director’s cut. Is it available to watch?
Liam Crowley: It’s in a vault somewhere. We’re all begging for it. Just like you.
Scott Eastwood: I’ve never seen it.
Liam Crowley: Can you tell us who your character would’ve been? Is that public knowledge?
Scott Eastwood: No, because they didn’t know. They were just talking about who he could come back as, and we could make him somebody and this and that, and they hadn’t really landed on any of that.
With James Gunn revitalizing the DC Universe, housing a lineup of upcoming movies and TV series, Crowley probed Eastwood about the possibility of his return to the DC realm. An enthusiastic Batman fan himself, Eastwood expressed his admiration for the Caped Crusader’s intricate duality as a character.
Liam Crowley: Wow. Well, if it’s a story that never gets told, fortunately DC’s in a cool spot right now. Rebooting everything. I know you’ve auditioned for superhero roles in the past and you’ve obviously been in a couple of comic book movies. Are there any DC roles that you have your eye on that you’d like to take a crack at?
Scott Eastwood: I mean, I think out of the DC universe, I’m definitely a Batman guy. I’m definitely a Batman guy. I think he’s the most interesting character because he is living double lives that are kind of a little bit more intriguing to me than some of the other ones. Yeah, I don’t know. There’s something cool about that character.
Insights from Scott Eastwood’s Comments on Suicide Squad 2
From Eastwood’s comments regarding his potential role in Suicide Squad 2, it’s evident that the film was poised for intriguing character developments. The idea of an actor playing a lesser-known character only to reveal a deeper connection to the comic book lore is not a novel concept in the superhero genre. Such revelations often engage audiences who possess knowledge of the comic canon.
While Eastwood did not clarify whether his character’s surprise reveal would have tied into the comics, it would have certainly enhanced GQ Edwards’ profile within the DCEU context. Though the speculation persists about connections to Dick Grayson/Nightwing, as rumored, it’s likely that Eastwood’s character was designed to fit snugly within the rich tapestry of the DC Universe.
Analyzing Scott Eastwood’s Remarks on Suicide Squad 2
Given Eastwood’s stature as one of the prominent actors in 2016’s Suicide Squad, it’s no surprise that Ayer had envisioned a notable arc for him in the sequel.
