Warning! This article contains SPOILERS for DC’s Creature Commandos. DC’s cinematic landscape is evolving rapidly, with David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman making waves well in advance of his feature film debut. His introduction could pave the way for the formation of the Justice League. I find James Gunn’s vision for the DC Universe refreshingly intriguing, merging iconic characters with lesser-known figures across its initial projects. This approach has proven fruitful for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so it’s exciting to see how DCU develops under this fresh strategy. Surprisingly, however, No Justice League film has been announced yet.
As we anticipate the upcoming releases, the absence of a Justice League film in the initial slate presented by DC Studios in January 2023 stands out. Nonetheless, DC is compensating for the Justice League’s absence by featuring multiple DCU characters in the early films and series—a trend evident in Corenswet’s Superman movie, which will showcase several fellow heroes. Recently, fans were taken aback by an unexpected appearance of Clark Kent in another DCU project ahead of his film.
David Corenswet’s Superman Has Made His DCU Debut
The Man of Steel: First Appearance in Animation
Ever since I first saw David Corenswet in The Politician in 2019, I’ve been enthusiastic about his potential as DC’s next Superman. His performance will be keenly observed when James Gunn’s Superman movie hits theaters next year. Fortunately, we don’t need to wait long to witness our first look at the Man of Steel. I was stunned to discover that Corenswet’s Superman debuted in the trailer for Creature Commandos, adding an unanticipated layer of intrigue.

The initial project of the DCU has released a trailer showcasing the upcoming episodes of Creature Commandos season one, highlighting the debuts of Corenswet’s Superman, Starfire from the Teen Titans, and John Cena’s Peacemaker. A vision of a grim future, presented by Anya Chalotra’s Circe, reveals a sequence where these heroes have fallen, with Superman depicted in a sobering crucified state. A subsequent trailer for episode four of Creature Commandos has been unveiled, broadening the narrative to include depictions of Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Hawkgirl, Booster Gold, and what appears to be Damian Wayne’s Robin, all depicted as deceased.
I’m Convinced That Creature Commandos Foreshadows the Justice League’s DCU Debut
Analyzing Circe’s Vision of a Dystopian Future
Although there hasn’t been a Justice League film officially announced yet, it’s difficult to dismiss the eventual arrival of the team in the DCU. While it’s understandable that Gunn would take a pause given the mixed reviews surrounding the DCEU’s previous outing, I suspect that Circe’s ominous vision signals a potential future that could manifest should the Justice League falter in addressing an imminent threat. This narrative tactic resonates with Zack Snyder’s famed Knightmare sequences.
The initial revelation showcased only three characters, but as more figures come to light—including Wonder Woman and Supergirl—I’m more confident that the final vision will encompass additional heroes. I would not be surprised if Batman, who has been integral to various JLA editions, also makes an appearance in this sequence. The inclusion of such pivotal figures hints that the DCU is gradually building towards a narrative that centers on a Justice League formation.
I Anticipate the Justice League Film Will Conclude the DCU’s First Chapter
More DCU Projects Are on the Horizon
During the announcement of the first wave of DCU projects, Gunn disclosed that less than half of the overall slate for Chapter One had been revealed.
It would be fitting if the concluding film of the DCU’s initial chapter serves as a culmination of the visions introduced in the franchise’s debut. Furthermore, Gunn emphasized that the projects unveiled thus far represent only a fraction of what is planned for the DC Universe. With all the hints and connections laid out, I am convinced that the Justice League will play a pivotal role in concluding this chapter.
