Creature Commandos actor David Harbour recently shared insights into his role as Eric Frankenstein within James Gunn’s DC Universe and teased potential developments for his character in future live-action adaptations. As 2024 draws to a close, the animated series Creature Commandos has launched, serving as a prologue to the larger narrative presented in DC Universe’s Chapter 1: “God and Monsters,”with additional films and series slated for 2025 and beyond.

The Creature Commandos narrative delves into one of the lesser-known factions within the DC comic universe. It follows Amanda Waller as she assembles Task Force M—a cohort of monsters—after finding the Suicide Squad no longer suitable for her needs. Headed by Rick Flag Sr., this team introduces a fresh ensemble of characters who, despite their monstrous exteriors, display deep humanity that resonates with viewers. Notably, the cast from Creature Commandos will reprise their roles in live-action films and series as the new DC Universe continues to unfold.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Harbour discussed his excitement for joining the DC Universe, particularly through the animated format of Creature Commandos. He highlighted the compelling scripts and the enthusiasm exhibited by James Gunn and producer Peter Safran, which drew him into the project. Harbour initially felt puzzled after reading the pilot, but after meeting with Gunn and Safran, he became captivated by their vision for the characters and story. According to Harbour:

“The scripts themselves were really good, and also just sitting down with James and seeing his passion and enthusiasm… I just want to work with this guy. James just loves these characters, and he thinks it’s one of the best things he’s ever written.”

A surprising aspect of Harbour’s performance is Eric’s fascination with Rick Flag Sr. He expressed that Eric, despite his monstrous form, desires to embrace his humanity and love, while being drawn to Flag’s strength and security. Harbour explained:

“Frankenstein wants to be a man. He knows he’s a cobbled-together piece of whatever. He sees in Grillo’s character this strong, capable man who is attractive to women and wants to understand and own that.”

He likened Eric’s quest to a darker rendition of Pinocchio, emphasizing the character’s longing to become a “real boy.”

“Yes, exactly. That’s a good comparison.”
