The Day of the Jackal Season 2: What’s Next for the Jackal?
The much-acclaimed series The Day of the Jackal has officially been renewed for season 2, prompting intrigue about the protagonist’s future endeavors. In contrast to Fred Zinnemann’s classic 1973 film and Frederick Forsyth’s original 1971 novel, the season 1 finale presents a stark twist that places Eddie Redmayne’s Jackal on a distinct trajectory. Notably, despite an intense confrontation with MI6 agent Bianca Pullman (played by Lashana Lynch), the Jackal once again proves his resilience, surviving yet another harrowing encounter.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producers Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant revealed insights into the upcoming season. Neame remarked on the Jackal’s unresolved issues, emphasizing that his family’s fate remains a critical concern, alongside a pressing debt he must confront. Marchant teased that they have a clear direction for the Jackal’s next mission, which revolves around his quest for his family, leaving the ultimate outcome shrouded in suspense.
Neame:
There’s some serious bit of unfinished business.Marchant:
We actually know what his priority is, in terms of what his next mission will be. He’s trying to find [his family]. Whether he does or not, let’s see.
Implications for the Jackal’s Journey
A New Mission Awaits
As season 2 unfolds, it is expected to continue directly from the cliffhanger at the end of season 1. The Jackal faced immense challenges while attempting to eliminate tech billionaire Ulle Dag Charles (portrayed by Khalid Abdalla), who is also known as UDC. Hired by rival Dance Timothy Winthrop (Charles Dance), the assassin was tasked with stopping the launch of a groundbreaking project called River. Although he ultimately completes this assassination task, the complications he faces signal a shift in focus.
After a tense encounter with Zina (Eleanor Matsuura), who was meant to finalize the payment, the Jackal discovers that Winthrop has no plans of honoring their agreement, placing a target on both their backs. With a significant debt looming and his family’s disappearance weighing on him, the Jackal appears intent on prioritizing his personal mission in season 2—searching for his wife and child.

Facing Crucial Choices
As the Jackal grapples with personal dilemmas, viewers are left with pressing questions about his fate—especially now that UDC was highlighted as his final job. Although the Jackal initially intended to retire, his plans unravel when his partner Nuria uncovers the truth and departs with their child. The season finale showcases a breaking point for the Jackal as he confronts his chaotic existence.
