Warning: contains spoilers for Justice League Unlimited #2!
DC’s Elder Statesman Joins Justice League Unlimited
In a remarkable move after 90 years, DC Comics is allowing one of its most established heroes to take center stage—though the question remains: how long will this acclaim endure? The newly launched Justice League Unlimited adopts a comprehensive “all-hands-on-deck”strategy, incorporating virtually every hero in existence. This inclusive approach has provided an opportunity for some lesser-known figures to stand alongside legendary icons like Superman and Batman. In the highly anticipated issue two, one of DC’s oldest heroes makes a noteworthy entry into the fold.
Amidst a crisis involving rogue Parademons, the League mobilizes a diverse team to counter the threat. Key players such as Superman and Wonder Woman join forces with newer recruits, including Black Lightning, Star Sapphire, and the enigmatic Doctor Occult. The operation divides into smaller units to maximize efficacy, with Doctor Occult teaming up with the Martian Manhunter. During their mission, Occult reveals he had knowledge of J’Onn J’Onzz shortly after his arrival on Earth, tracing back to his investigation of Professor Erdel, who was responsible for J’Onn’s fateful arrival.
Understanding Doctor Occult: DC Comics’ Premier Character
Doctor Occult Shares a Unique Legacy with Superman
Despite his significant historical stature, few fans today are aware of Doctor Occult, DC’s first superhero. First appearing in 1935’s More Fun Comics #6, he actually predated Superman’s iconic launch by a mere three years. Doctor Occult was born from the creative minds of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster—creators of Superman who later became industry pioneers. Unfortunately, despite this remarkable pedigree, Doctor Occult’s popularity waned before the debut of Action Comics #1.
The Renaissance of Doctor Occult in the 1980s
Doctor Occult: An Early Representation of Transgender Heroism?
It wasn’t until the release of Secret Origins #17 in 1987 that Doctor Occult’s backstory was finally fully realized. Writers Roy Thomas and E. Nelson Bridwell, alongside artist Howard Simpson, explored the character’s origins, including his relationship with his assistant, Rose Psychic. Both characters were saved as infants from a sinister, demonic force by a group known as The Seven, who subsequently trained them in the mystic arts. As adults, they ventured to America to solve paranormal mysteries.

Doctor Occult made a resurgence in the 1990s with the release of The Books of Magic, where his bond with Rose Psychic was further explored. As part of this miniseries, he, alongside characters like the Phantom Stranger, Mister E, and John Constantine, mentored the young Tim Hunter in magic. A notable aspect of Doctor Occult’s character is the ambiguity surrounding his identity; versions of the story suggest that he and Psychic share a soul, lending itself to interpretations of him as an early representation of transgender heroism.
Following the success of Books of Magic, Doctor Occult continued making sporadic appearances throughout the ’90s, primarily in supporting roles. He became a member of the Sentinels of Magic, a precursor to the modern Justice League Dark. Though he remained active in the New 52 era, his involvement in Justice League Unlimited #2 marks his significant return to the spotlight.
The Future of Doctor Occult: A Call to Action for DC
Why DC Must Elevate Doctor Occult’s Role
Doctor Occult possesses the potential to be a leading figure in the DC universe, yet he often remains overshadowed and underestimated. His character comes equipped with a rich backstory interwoven with elements of mystique and detective work. Visually, Doctor Occult bears a resemblance to Superman, and his previous costumes have akin elements to those of the iconic hero—perhaps indicating Siegel and Shuster’s initial explorations before Superman came to fruition. However, his trenchcoat and fedora evoke a bygone era, which could impact how modern readers perceive him.
Nevertheless, creative teams like Mark Waid and Dan Mora have successfully positioned Doctor Occult in a larger narrative framework, harnessing both his magical abilities and investigative skills. In his recent appearances, Occult showcases a deep understanding of morality and discretion—evidenced by not exposing the Martian Manhunter’s true identity. This complexity enriches him as a character, indicating the wealth of storytelling possibilities that lie ahead.
To ensure Doctor Occult’s evolution within the DC lore, it is imperative for the publishers to integrate him more significantly in upcoming narratives. Given his storied past, diverse abilities, and unique character qualities, DC has a valuable asset that deserves more visibility and innovation in future projects.
