WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for BATMAN AND ROBIN #16!
Five years have elapsed since the devastating moment when Bane mercilessly killed Alfred Pennyworth in front of Damian Wayne, otherwise known as Robin. This obscenely brutal act of vengeance against Batman, which included snapping Alfred’s neck, still casts a long shadow over the Bat-Family. The repercussions of this loss continue to resonate deeply, as the recent narrative unfolds, revealing how impacted the heroes remain by this heartbreaking event.
Even after Alfred’s tragic demise during the 2019 City of Bane storyline, his influence persists throughout various Bat-Family comics—from Batman to Nightwing and beyond. Among all, it is Damian Wayne who bears the heaviest burden, a theme poignantly explored in Joshua Williamson’s series, Robin and Batman and Robin.
As Phillip Kennedy Johnson and Carmine Di Giandomenico assume creative control of the Batman and Robin series, it becomes evident that Alfred’s death will continue to haunt Damian, possibly shaping his decision to resign from his role as Robin.
Batman & Robin Clash Over the Lingering Trauma of Alfred’s Death
“I Will Not Have Anyone Dying for My Mistakes the Way [Alfred] Died For Yours.” — Damian Wayne in Batman and Robin #16 (2024)
From the onset of Johnson and Di Giandomenico’s stewardship starting with issue #14, hints of a potential shift in Damian’s journey have emerged. The young hero grapples with uncertainty about his role as Robin amidst the chaos of crime-fighting. These apprehensions culminate in a fiery confrontation in issue #16, where Damian reveals he’s been skipping school to volunteer at a hospital, seeking an alternative to disheartening patrol duties alongside Bruce.
Bruce, visibly disappointed, expresses skepticism regarding Damian’s commitment. This elicits an intense reaction from Damian, who retorts, “When you were my age, you walked across the Earth to find your path! I’m not allowed to question mine?” Bruce counters with his own experiences, saying, “You have a father to talk to! I didn’t!” However, Damian keenly points out Bruce’s former guardian, Alfred, asserting that support is still part of his lineage. He drives the conversation home with a striking declaration: “And I will not have anyone dying for my mistakes the way he died for yours.” With that, he storms off, leaving Bruce alone to ponder his words.
