Exploring deadmau5’s Journey with Music and Gaming

“My first collection of timeless soundtracks were things like Castlevania, Final Fantasy, and Paperboy.”

deadmau5: My gaming origins trace back to the Atari 1200 and 2600, progressing to Commodores. These early consoles had very basic audio capabilities; music was limited to blips and beeps. However, the arrival of the Nintendo Entertainment System changed everything with its FM frequency modulation chip, allowing for polyphonic sounds. Iconic game soundtracks from Castlevania and Legend of Zelda began to emerge, and it was exhilarating for someone with a passion for both music and gaming.

This integration of music and gaming inspired me to explore the potential of creating music with video game engines. At that time, while mainstream music thrived with rich sound production, video game soundtracks still struggled with technology limitations. This disparity sparked my curiosity and led me on a journey to merge music with the gaming universe.

Collaborating with World of Tanks Blitz

“I like tanks; that’s what drew me in.”

ScreenRant: What initially attracted you to the World of Tanks franchise?

deadmau5: Tanks themselves drew me into the franchise. I enjoy team battle royale games with open-world exploration, and the deliberate movement of tanks offers a unique, strategic gameplay experience that captivates me.

ScreenRant: How did this collaboration unfold, and what vibes do you think your music brings to the game?

deadmau5: The opportunity arose through a casual conversation in my inbox. I’m involved in multiple projects at once, and while I often suggest collaborations, management usually decides on the final details. When pitched the idea of incorporating my tracks, I was excited and ready to make it happen.

Creating Exclusive Tracks for World of Tanks Blitz

“I tend to not finish tracks more than I do actually finish them and put them out there.”

ScreenRant: Given your iconic status in the music industry, how do you integrate your unique sound into World of Tanks Blitz?

deadmau5: Many of the tracks I create are often only partially finished. I have a robust collection of musical ideas; when approached for an exclusive track, I sifted through my existing library, found a suitable piece, and tailored it to fit with the tank-themed gameplay.

ScreenRant: Does your gameplay experience influence your music creation?

deadmau5: Not quite. I find that in many cases, I mute the game’s background music while playing because it distracts me from the gameplay itself. Observing sound compositions tends to divert my attention away from the action. It’s a challenge to fully engage with both the game and the music soundtrack.

The Future of Gaming and Music Synergy

“Video games are very different from writing music because you have to play by rules.”

ScreenRant: How has your appreciation for video games influenced your music journey?

deadmau5: While my love for music evolves independently, the integration of gaming into my creative process happened later when I discovered artists like Trent Reznor contributing to video games. Their meticulous approach to sound design in gaming intrigued me and led me to explore how I could incorporate similar principles into my music.

Bringing it All Full Circle with World of Tanks Blitz

“Blending my music with the video game world is just a self-fulfillment thing.”

ScreenRant: How competitive do you become when gaming?

deadmau5: Competition brings out both my enjoyment and my frustrations, but I embrace it nonetheless.

ScreenRant: Can you elaborate on this project that blends your music with gaming?

deadmau5: My fusion of music and gaming is deeply fulfilling. It’s an intersection of two significant passions that keep me engaged in collaborative projects. It’s always exciting to witness these two worlds merge.
