The Inspector Lynley Mysteries remains a treasured gem in British television history. Featuring the charming Nathaniel Parker as DI Thomas Lynley and the astute Sharon Small as DS Barbara Havers, this series skillfully navigated themes of ethics, social class, and gender dynamics that continue to shape British culture today, all while the dynamic pair tackled a series of perplexing crimes.
The potential for the show’s revival was always on the horizon, whether through a reimagining of the classic series or a fresh take altogether. It turns out, viewers can expect the latter; BBC and BritBox are collaborating to present a completely new adaptation of The Inspector Lynley Mysteries. Prepare for the return of Lynley.
Meet the Cast of Lynley
Currently shooting in scenic Ireland, the new Lynley series has cast Leo Suter (from Vikings: Valhalla) in the role of DI “Tommy” Lynley, with Sofia Barclay (known for Ted Lasso) portraying DS Barbara Havers. Similar to the original iteration, DI Tommy Lynley is characterized by his aristocratic roots, while DS Barbara Havers emerges from a working-class background. This disparity is likely to result in some friction, but ultimately their combined expertise will forge an exceptional partnership in solving crimes.
Alongside Suter and Barclay, the ensemble includes Daniel Mays (Magpie Murders) as DCI Brian Nies, a senior detective; Niamh Walsh (The English Game) as Helen Clyde, a real estate agent and Lynley’s romantic interest; Michael Workeye (My Lady Jane) playing Tony Bekele, a tech expert; and Joshua Sher (Vera) as Simon St. James, one of the forensic analysts on the team.
What’s the New Lynley About?
While specific plot details are being kept under wraps, BritBox has offered a tantalizing glimpse of what to expect in this revival, as shared with The Mary Sue:
“Tommy Lynley, an exceptional detective, feels like an outsider within the police force due to his noble lineage. He partners with Barbara Havers, a sergeant known for her unconventional methods and working-class upbringing. Despite their apparent differences and the challenges they face, this unlikely pair emerges as a powerful team, united in their quest for justice. His intellect paired with her drive—his background alongside her instincts—creates a partnership that leads them both to discover their true places in the world.”
As filming is underway, we anticipate the premiere of this four-part series in late 2025, though a precise date has yet to be announced. The show will be available on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK, and on BritBox in the US and Canada. Fans can currently catch the original six-season run on BBC iPlayer and BritBox. The Lynley novels by Elizabeth George, which served as the foundation for both adaptations, have been translated into over 30 languages, and George will also take on the role of executive producer for this new series.
This new iteration of Lynley is spearheaded by Steve Thompson, known for Vienna Blood and Sherlock. Ed Bazalgette (Marie Antoinette, The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die) will direct, while the talented Suzanne McAuley (Magpie Murders, Love/Hate) takes the helm as producer for the series.
