Intriguingly, New Blood shifted this focus to ketamine, a change that Original Sin subsequently reversed.

During the climactic moments of New Blood, Angela Bishop (Julia Jones) uncovered Dexter’s secret identity as the Bay Harbor Butcher. However, how she made this crucial deduction sparked widespread debate. Angela linked the ketamine used to sedate a corpse found in Iron Lake with Dexter’s past actions in Miami. Yet, the inconsistency lies in the fact that throughout the original series, Dexter primarily relied on M99, and New Blood shifted to ketamine merely to facilitate Angela’s conclusion. Besides merely reverting back to M99, Original Sin provided new context regarding Dexter’s decision to utilize this sedative. His supervisor, Tanya Martin (Sarah Michelle Gellar), who was passionate about horse racing, informed Dexter of M99’s efficacy in sedating large animals, which could keep them unconscious for several hours. Initially, Dexter had relied on physical strength; however, after a near mishap with Mad-Dog (Joe Pantoliano) waking up too soon in Episode 4, he pivoted to using M99, even exhibiting resourcefulness by breaking into a horse stable to procure the vials of the drug.
