WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for the first episode of Dexter: Original Sin.
The new prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, created by Clyde Phillips, fails to incorporate a memorable “Dexterism”in its inaugural episode. This series revisits a post-college Dexter Morgan as he embraces his internal “dark passenger,”guided by the principles instilled by his adopted father, Harry. In this narrative, Dexter utilizes Harry’s moral code to navigate his violent impulses while avoiding detection.
Fans were thrilled to see Michael C. Hall reprise his iconic role in 2021’s Dexter: New Blood. In Dexter: Original Sin, he returns as the internal voice of Dexter, serving as both narrator and guide. Set in Miami during 1991, this series chronicles Dexter’s early days at Miami Metro PD. It is expected to explore several notable kills referenced within the established Dexter mythology. Additionally, another series titled Dexter: Resurrection is anticipated to premiere in the summer of 2025, where Hall is also expected to return to his iconic role.
New episodes of Dexter: Original Sin are released every Friday exclusively on Paramount+.
Dexter’s Missed Opportunity at Miami Metro
The Significance of Dexter’s Donuts
In the premiere episode of Dexter: Original Sin, Dexter Morgan makes his debut at Miami Metro—yet notably absent is his traditional box of donuts. Considering it’s his first introduction at the precinct and his desire to make a good impression, failing to include this iconic element feels like a significant oversight. The donuts have always been a charming aspect of Dexter’s personality and workplace dynamics, highlighting his efforts to blend amiably with colleagues.
Interestingly, towards the end of the premiere, there’s a subtle nod to this absence. Camilla Figg, Miami Metro’s records supervisor, embodied by Margo Martindale in the original series, greets Harry with a donut perched atop her coffee cup. This moment hints that the origins of Dexter’s donut tradition might be explored further in upcoming episodes of Dexter: Original Sin.
Potential for a Donut Origin Story
Exploring Dexter’s Donut Legacy
Despite the oversight in the premiere regarding Dexter’s beloved donuts, there remains ample opportunity for Dexter: Original Sin to delve into the origins of this cherished workplace tradition. The hint provided by Camilla could pave the way for a thoughtful exploration into why Dexter started bringing donuts to the station. Many fans are hopeful for a compelling backstory to accompany his quirky yet endearing habit as the series progresses.
