WARNING! This article contains major spoilers for Dexter: Original Sin Season 1, Episode 2!
In the second episode of Dexter: Original Sin, fans are treated to the return of a beloved character from the original series, which also serves as a poignant reminder of her tragic storyline intertwined with Dexter’s journey. Several original characters reappear in Original Sin, depicted at a younger age; however, fans have to grapple with the fact that not all of them survive the events of Dexter’s original narrative. Prominent figures like Harry Morgan, Maria LaGuerta, Debra Morgan, and Camilla Figg do return, only to meet their unfortunate ends by the conclusion of Season 8.
While the deaths of Deb and Maria occur towards the close of the original series, Camilla Figg’s demise is introduced much earlier. This makes her reintroduction in Dexter: Original Sin’s storyline particularly bittersweet, especially during her gentle and nurturing exchanges with the young Dexter as he navigates the files at Miami Metro. Although these interactions are heartwarming, they inevitably evoke the sorrowful fate of their bond, which reaches a tragic culmination approximately 17 years later.
Dexter Morgan Grants Camilla Figg a Mercy Kill in Dexter Season 3
Dexter Reluctantly Euthanizes Camilla After Her Pleas to End Her Suffering
Camilla remains one of the few individuals aware of Dexter’s complicated history involving Laura Moser and the protective measures taken by Harry to shield him from the truth. Despite this, her affection for both men compels her to accept their choices regarding Dexter’s upbringing. However, when Dexter uncovers the depth of their deception, he becomes furious. Nonetheless, the emotional bond between Dexter and Camilla endures up until Season 3, when he finds out she is gravely ill.
It is revealed that Camilla has been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, following the death of her husband a year prior. Throughout Season 3, Dexter grapples with his feelings as he visits her in the hospital. Their conversations increasingly revolve around mortality and the pain associated with dying. During one particularly impactful discussion, Camilla confesses that while she has come to terms with her impending death, she cannot tolerate the agony she endures. As her condition worsens, she expresses a desire to leave this world, stating that death would be “a mercy.”
In the poignant episode “Easy as Pie,”Camilla ultimately dies, leading Dexter to make an excruciating choice about her fate. Despite his initial reluctance to breach his Code, Dexter arranges to administer a mercy kill by stealthily incorporating euthanasia drugs into her favorite dessert, a “perfect” key lime pie, for which she expresses gratitude. Their parting moments are made even more heartbreaking as she praises him for taking the life of his brother, Brian Moser, the infamous Ice Truck Killer—an act rooted in her understanding and acceptance of who Dexter truly is.
Original Sin Emphasizes Camilla as Dexter’s Closest Mother Figure After Laura and Doris
Camilla Served as a Vital Parental Influence in Dexter’s Life
Though Dexter is haunted by his Dark Passenger’s insatiable thirst for blood, he still possesses moral boundaries. This is particularly evident when young Dexter is deeply affected by the harm inflicted on others, as seen in Season 1, Episode 2 of Original Sin, where the thought of hurting children is unbearable for him. Ultimately, Dexter would never bring himself to kill someone he cares for deeply—especially not someone like Camilla, who loved him unconditionally. His decision to end Brian’s life was dictated by the Code, but taking Camilla’s life was a line he could not cross.

Camilla’s Death Frighteningly Foreshadows Dexter’s Mercy Killing of Deb in the Original Series Finale
Dexter’s Euthanasia of Debra Mirrors His Actions with Camilla
Camilla’s death marks a significant milestone in Dexter’s journey of mercy killings, setting a precedent for future acts of compassion towards his loved ones. During Dexter’s visits to Camilla, Deb refuses to accompany him, revealing her aversion to witnessing the afflicted, which reminds her of their mother’s illness. In a haunting conversation regarding Camilla’s suffering, Deb expresses her desire for Dexter to euthanize her if she ever reaches a debilitating state.
This ominous foreshadowing becomes a tragic reality during the finale of the original series when Deb finds herself on life support after being shot by Oliver Saxon.
