Following the initial kill of Nurse Mary in the premiere, Dexter sets his sights on “Handsome”Tony Ferrer for his second target. Ferrer, a loan shark, previously pressured a Cuban immigrant named Rene, a former busboy at a restaurant frequented by Angel Batista. Tragically, Rene died by suicide after Ferrer demanded repayment. With Ferrer’s violent actions leading to the death of Rene’s mother, Carla Carballo, Dexter recognizes the need for retribution.

Upon hearing Angel’s harrowing account, Dexter learns that Ferrer remains free, eluding charges from the Miami PD. By the end of episode 2, amidst the chaos of an operation to rescue a judge’s son, Dexter decides to make his move. He approaches Ferrer under the guise of “Patrick Bateman,”a direct nod to American Psycho, armed with a fake ID created by Masuka, seeking to borrow $500. The encounter culminates in Ferrer’s murder at the gripping conclusion of episode 3.

The Implications of Dexter’s Kill: A Foreshadowing of His Future Methods

An Evolution Toward Dexter’s Signature Ritual

Dexter in a face shield, smirking in Dexter: Original Sin

In the original series, Dexter typically immobilizes his victims with sedatives before binding them with his infamous tape. However, in Dexter: Original Sin, we witness a younger, more vigorous Dexter using pure physicality to incapacitate Ferrer. This marks a significant shift in Dexter’s approach, as he manages to put Ferrer to sleep with a headlock.

Further, when he secures Ferrer to his table, Dexter adopts an early semblance of his trademark kill ritual by striking Ferrer’s cheek with a ball, a deliberate echo of the cuts he inflicts on his victims for blood slides. This action signifies the initial stages of Dexter’s evolving kill methodology, creating an intriguing parallel to his methods as they develop throughout the series.
