Highlights

  • Plans for a sequel to Werewolf by Night are being discussed, though the timeline remains unclear due to shifts in the industry and the MCU.

  • While fans anticipated the sequel by now, production has not commenced, but optimism still exists.

Around this time in 2022, Werewolf by Night premiered on Disney+, leaving fans eagerly speculating about a sequel ever since. Earlier this month, the creators behind the initial film discussed how close they are to realizing Werewolf by Night 2 and the efforts they are putting into making it happen.

Although it doesn’t officially fall within the MCU, Werewolf by Night has carved a niche as one of the most cherished parts of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks to its fresh take. Michael Giacchino, the talented composer-turned-director, is aware of the high expectations from fans. He acknowledges the significant amount of “recalibration”occurring both within the MCU and the broader film industry. Yet, he remains positive about the likelihood of a sequel in the near future.

In a recent video interview primarily focused on music for The Penguin and Fantastic Four, Giacchino and his son touched on the status of the potential sequel. During their discussion about the industry’s ‘recalibration,’ he pointed out that some projects may need to be sidelined for now. However, he does not believe that the project is being completely abandoned, expressing confidence that Marvel will return to this creative universe, albeit the timeline remains ambiguous. He concluded on an optimistic note, stating, “We’ll get there.”

Werewolf by Night was a unique addition to Disney+, distinguished by its focus away from traditional superheroes. Set in Bloodstone Temple, this black-and-white streaming special followed a covert group of monster hunters competing for a potent relic. Its presentation in black and white was a nod to classic monster films, reminiscent of the original Wolfman.

Moreover, Werewolf by Night uniquely marked Marvel’s foray into the horror genre. Although the studio has indicated a commitment to exploring this realm further, it has largely shied away from pure horror narratives since the release of the special. Elements of horror have appeared in series such as Wandavision, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and Agatha All Along, but pure horror has not been the focus post-special.

The favorable reception and popularity of Werewolf by Night led many fans to anticipate a sequel by 2024. However, as of now, there are no signs of production activity, casting developments, or even a script underway. As the new phase of the MCU begins to stabilize and take shape, it is possible that Marvel can shift focus back to this venture, allowing them to eventually “get there.”
