Baldur’s Gate 3 is set to introduce its eighth major patch in 2025, featuring a substantial addition of 12 new subclasses for players to explore. Among these, the Circle of Stars subclass will be available for druid characters, originally pulled from the Dungeons & Dragons supplement, Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything. This subclass distinctively alters the typical druid experience by providing unique gameplay options that diverge from standard animal transformations.
Significantly, the Circle of Stars allows druids to utilize a special form known as “starry form,” moving away from traditional wild shape transformations. Wild shape generally offers powerful advantages in both D&D and Baldur’s Gate 3, but this new “starry form”introduces innovative mechanics. Many players may find it more appealing to harness the cosmic energies rather than morph into a creature like an owlbear or dinosaur.
Taking the Form of Constellations
Empower Your Druid with Starlight
Starting at level two, druids adopting the Circle of Stars subclass receive access to powerful cantrips and spells. Most importantly, they can activate their starry form using wild shape charges through a bonus action, which allows them to embody one of three constellations: the archer, the chalice, or the dragon. Each constellation comes with its own unique abilities and radiates bright light around the druid.
This swift transformation mechanism is notably quicker than many of the druid’s other wild shape options, apart from the moon druid’s combat transformation. By remaining in humanoid form, the druid can continue casting spells and exercising other class features unavailable in animal forms. This creates a temporary power-up state rather than a complete shift into another creature.
Creating a Druid: Sniper, Healer, or Superior Spellcaster
Understanding Each of the Starry Forms
The three starry forms within the Circle of Stars subclass offer progressively enhanced traits as the druid progresses. The archer form allows druids to utilize bonus actions to launch a radiant ranged attack at an enemy, considerably increasing their damage potential per turn. Conversely, the chalice form amplifies the effectiveness of healing spells, allowing druids to heal multiple allies using single-target spells like Healing Word or Cure Wounds.
Mechanically, the chalice form allows the druid to heal one ally within 30 feet for 1d8 plus their wisdom modifier each time they cast a healing spell. This ensures they can either assist one more ally or amplify the healing received by the target—or even heal themselves.
The dragon constellation introduces additional complexities. At second level, it significantly enhances the druid’s ability to succeed on intelligence or wisdom checks and guarantees success on concentration checks while maintaining spellcasting. As other starry forms scale with increased damage and healing dice, the dragon form also grants the ability to fly. While this feature can be advantageous, its overall utility in Baldur’s Gate 3 may vary given the numerous other methods for flight available to players.
Starry Forms: A Druid Transformation Analysis
Is an Owlbear Still the Best Option?
Compared to other druid subclasses available in Baldur’s Gate 3, the Circle of Stars druid does exhibit some limitations. A key disadvantage is that, unlike other wild shape applications, the starry forms do not provide additional hit points. In BG3, druids often serve as effective tanks as their wild shape offers a significant health buffer. However, the Circle of Stars lacks this essential attribute.
It’s crucial to note that all other druid forms dissipate once the druid loses the temporary health provided by their transformations. Additionally, forms like the spores druid keep their powers only if their temporary hit points are intact. In contrast, the Circle of Stars druid provides an excellent option for players seeking to boost their healing and spellcasting capabilities while maintaining access to all class features, thereby alleviating the concern that a substantial enemy hit might deplete their wild shape charges in Baldur’s Gate 3.
