Woodstone Mansion, the intriguing setting for the supernatural comedy Ghosts, serves as the heart of both the American and UK versions of the show. Since its inception on CBS, the series has followed Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) as they operate a bed-and-breakfast in this haunted estate. For four years, the couple has navigated life with the resident ghosts, who can only venture beyond the mansion’s boundaries by possessing the living.
This blend of comedy and supernatural lore is enriched by the diverse histories of the ghosts who inhabit Woodstone Mansion. Some date back over a millennium, having existed long before the mansion was constructed, while others have more recent origins. The show has explored the complex pasts of many spirits, but it has yet to reveal the story behind the mansion’s genesis.
The Construction of Woodstone Mansion
A Haunted Landscape Before the Mansion
Despite the long-standing presence of certain ghosts like Thor (Devan Chandler Long) and Sass (Román Zaragoza), Woodstone Mansion was not built until the mid-1800s. Thor, a spirit linked to a lightning strike, only discovered his ability to control electricity after the mansion was outfitted with electrical wiring in 1883. Until then, there was no structure on the property when he perished around 1070 CE. Sass, who died in the 1500s, likewise roamed the land before any European settlement occurred, meaning the mansion lay several centuries in the future.
Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky), the oldest ghost tied to the mansion, has a personal history that intertwines with its construction. Assuming she was born in 1850, it is reasonable to deduce that her parents might have completed the mansion in 1849 to accommodate their new family. While the building might have been ready sometime earlier in the decade, it is unlikely it was constructed before her parents moved there, since various ghosts associated with cholera had occupied a pest house on the land prior to that.

Hetty’s Claim vs. Historical Facts
In season 1, episode 4 of Ghosts, Hetty asserts that she is the architect of the mansion. However, even assuming she possesses undisclosed time-travel abilities, it contradicts the timeline of her life. The house was a gift from her father upon her marriage to Elijah (Matt Walsh) in the 1870s, and she couldn’t have built it as a child in the 1850s. The evidence suggests that the mansion predated her birth, reinforcing the idea that it was constructed by her family, as it prominently bears their name.
The prevailing theory proposes that Hetty’s father initiated the mansion’s construction during her mother’s pregnancy. It’s likely that when Hetty speaks of “building the mansion,” she refers to her family’s ownership of it. While no episodes have yet detailed the mansion’s origin story, there remains potential for an exploration of this narrative arc in future seasons, potentially spotlighting Hetty or other spirits as they delve into their intertwined histories.
