There are several pressing concerns we need to address. On October 10, 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign shared an old 13-second clip on the @kamalahq TikTok account featuring comments made by former President Donald Trump at a Black conservative event, highlighting his troubling and, to put it mildly, clumsy tactic of manipulating racial tensions for political purposes.

During the Black Conservative Federation Honors Gala held in Columbia, SC, back in February, Trump posed an inappropriate question to his captivated audience: “Would you prefer the Black president or the white president who managed to save $1.7 billion? I believe they’re leaning towards the white candidate at this moment.”
This unnecessary remark, stemming from a long-winded anecdote involving Air Force One negotiations that few find relevant, illustrates Trump’s tendency to invoke racial context in trivial discussions, ultimately flooding the discourse with nonsensical rhetoric. By casting the choice as between a “Black president” (Obama) and a “white president” (himself), Trump trivializes significant policy debates through unfounded racial comparisons.
The setting of Trump’s speech, again addressing a Black conservative audience, does not excuse his language. In fact, it accentuates his strategic, cynical approach of appealing with racially charged rhetoric to specific groups, positioning himself as the preferred advocate for Black conservatives grappling with fears of liberal dominance.
Notably, the reliable fact-checking resource Snopes’ examination of the remarks appears insufficient in this unusual case. Their analysis narrows in on the technicalities of the video’s initial and later iterations while failing to address the harmful consequences of Trump’s flippant dog-whistling. Their report points out that Trump didn’t explicitly mention Kamala Harris, nor did he acknowledge that Biden remained the expected nominee at that time. However, this perspective overlooks the broader implications.
The crux of the matter transcends specific individuals or timing. It revolves around a former president and current candidate who persistently weaponizes race as a tool to energize his follower base. Trump’s “white candidate” remark contributes to a broader trend of exacerbating racial tensions and grievances among his supporters.
Indeed, Snopes fulfilled its obligation to its audience. Their concentration on contextual elements—which @kamalahq could arguably be held accountable for in its subsequent use—serves to shield Trump’s divisive rhetoric.
Trump’s documented history of employing racist dog whistles and overt prejudice necessitates that we interpret these remarks not merely as isolated missteps, but rather as components of a calculated strategy aimed at inundating discourse with harmful rhetoric to exploit racial divides for political benefits.
