Former President Donald Trump has escalated his anti-immigration discourse at recent campaign events in Arizona and Texas, labeling the United States as “a garbage can for the world” and “a dumping ground” for immigrants.
This derogatory analogy first emerged at a rally in Tempe, Arizona, and was reiterated hours later in Austin, Texas, as well as in Pennsylvania, where he seems to believe the phrase resonates. “First time I’ve ever said garbage can. But you know what? It’s a very accurate description,” Trump remarked to his supporters.

Vice President Kamala Harris criticized Trump’s remarks during a campaign event in Houston that featured a performance by Beyoncé in support of her. “This is someone who is a former president of the United States, who has a bully pulpit. And this is how he uses it?” Harris questioned, emphasizing the alarming nature of a former president employing such degrading and racially charged language. Unlike Ronald Reagan’s vision of a “shining city upon a hill,” Trump’s perspective on America is starkly different.

“The president of the United States should be someone who elevates discourse and talks about the best of who we are,” Harris continued, contrasting Trump’s divisive rhetoric with her own more inclusive vision for leadership.
Pennsylvania Republican: How Donald Trump talks about this country is the opposite of what brought me to the Republican Party in the first place. Ronald Reagan used to say America was ‘a shining city upon a hill.’ Donald Trump just called America ‘a garbage can’ pic.twitter.com/4kjjKPvMmY

“It’s just another example of how he really belittles our country,” Harris concluded. Additionally, this incident highlights Trump’s ongoing distortion of immigrant narratives and the factors influencing their migration to the U.S. He fails to provide context regarding why individuals from countries with struggling governments seek better opportunities and environments for their families.

Trump’s recent provocative remarks are part of a strategic focus on immigration, aiming to paint immigrants as convenient scapegoats as the presidential race intensifies. Besides seeking retribution, the former president has made border security and immigration control central to his campaign, despite his previous lack of achievement in these areas during his first term, pledging rigorous enforcement measures if he returns to office.
