It’s hardly shocking that Donald Trump seeks to exert total control over those around him. Multiple reports indicate Trump has expressed a desire for the authority of a dictator, looking for unwavering loyalty from those in his inner circle, including military personnel.
The Mary Sue has published numerous articles about Trump’s insults, fabrications, and the absurdity of many of his actions. Beneath this layer of childish antics and staggering ignorance, however, lies a serious threat. Observers and mental health professionals alike have used terms like psychopath and sociopath to describe him, as he seems to meet many criteria associated with both. Trump appears largely indifferent to the well-being of others, often perceiving them merely as tools for his objectives, reminiscent of notorious historical figures.
In a recent article in The Atlantic, editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg explored the dynamics between Trump and the U.S. military. His comprehensive investigation, based on insights from individuals who were close to Trump during his presidency and in recent years, reveals a man devoid of empathy for military personnel and eager to use armed forces for his personal agenda.
Goldberg cites statements from former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, a U.S. Marine Corps General and father of a fallen soldier, as well as insights from other distinguished military and political figures.
“I need the kind of generals that Hitler had”
Donald Trump said “I need the kind of generals that Hitler had.” As a 24-year veteran of our military, that makes me sick as hell — and it should make you sick. pic.twitter.com/vmMJF7RaC5

Goldberg recounts that two unnamed witnesses overheard Trump proclaiming in a private setting, “I need the kind of generals that Hitler had, people who were completely loyal and followed orders.” If accurate, this alarming remark should inspire anxiety for everyone, not just citizens of the United States.
Time and again, Trump has alluded to Hitler, not to denounce his monstrous acts, but to emphasize supposed “positive attributes.” In a discussion recounted in Jim Sciutto’s book, *The Return of Great Powers*, Kelly recalls a moment with Trump where Trump remarked, “Well, but Hitler did some good things,” prompting Kelly to ask, “Like what?” Trump responded, “Well, (Hitler) rebuilt the economy.” Kelly had to press Trump on the consequences of that economy, pointing out it was wielded against his own people and the world, urging Trump never to praise such a figure.
Goldberg’s piece underscores Trump’s desire to use the military for his purposes, exemplified by inquiries about deploying troops to confront protestors during the George Floyd demonstrations. Trump’s utter disregard for service members, whether captured, injured, or killed, is evident in his contempt for war hero and former Senator John McCain. While many hold McCain in high esteem, Trump openly dismissed him in July 2015, stating, “He’s not a war hero. He is a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”
Trump’s scorn extends to all veterans who have faced adversity in service. In 2020, Goldberg detailed Trump’s views in an article titled, Trump: Americans Who Died in War Are ‘Losers’ and ‘Suckers’.
A man who wishes to be “dictator for a day”
Trump’s admiration for the authoritarian regimes of leaders like Kim Jong Un, Vladimir Putin, and Xi Jinping is well-documented. He appears envious of their capacity to rule through intimidation and possess forces ready to suppress any dissent. Notably, last year, Trump openly expressed a desire to assume dictatorial powers upon taking office, including the authority to close borders and “drill, drill, drill.” Who genuinely believes Trump would relinquish such power after just a single day?
Trump regards the military as an extension of his authority. Goldberg’s article reveals that he envisions the military catering to his personal desires rather than serving the nation. Should Trump regain the presidency, he is likely to attempt to reassert control over the mightiest military force on the planet. If this were to occur, we can only hope that there are sufficient wise individuals surrounding him to prevent any detrimental actions.
