As Goku and his companions navigate this new and uncharted territory, the power of world-building remains evident, enhancing the narrative and overall experience of the series. However, despite the promising start and an innovative setting, the latest installment, Episode #10 titled “Ocean,”reveals signs of a potential downfall for the series, particularly in terms of its suspenseful dynamics.

A Lack of Meaningful Threats in Dragon Ball Daima

Goku’s Undemanding Challenges

Reaching the milestone of ten episodes, Dragon Ball Daima has provided a blend of elements appealing to its diverse fanbase. Goku’s engaging battle with Tamigami #3 stands out visually, presenting one of the franchise’s most impressive fights to date. However, Goku’s victory came with minimal effort, indicating a troubling trend—an absence of high stakes.

Although Goku consistently triumphs over adversaries, the thrill of combat diminishes when his opponents are unable to pose significant threats. So far, the primary dangers he has encountered stem from wild creatures or the environment, rather than formidable foes. Even against Tamigami #3, Goku managed to secure an easy win without tapping into his full potential, like utilizing the Super Saiyan 2 form.

To date, the identity of the definitive antagonist in the series remains a mystery. Majin Kuu initially appeared to be a promising threat; however, his lackluster combat performance in Episode #10 raises doubts about his capabilities. Additionally, Gomah, who created the situation of turning the main characters into children, is hinted to possess formidable magic, yet his constant surprise at Goku’s prowess does not inspire confidence in his power.

While Dragon Ball Daima excels in visual artistry, world-building, and an exciting premise, it risks waning excitement without genuine tests for its heroes. With Vegeta and Piccolo now collaborating with Goku, the trio may become an indomitable force against challenges yet to be introduced.

The Legacy of High Stakes in Dragon Ball

The Current Absence of Tension

Historically, even though death in Dragon Ball is rarely permanent, the narrative has consistently showcased the weight and gravity of its battles. Each confrontation carries significant consequences. Goku’s inability to defeat Demon King Piccolo would have spelled doom for Earth, and failing to overcome Raditz put his only son’s fate on the line. Similarly, the universe faced dire repercussions if Frieza had not been stopped. Each encounter until now has inherently involved high stakes.

Currently, the central dilemma revolves around the heroes’ potential inability to revert to adulthood, which, while certainly inconvenient, does not evoke the same urgency as past threats. Luckily, with only ten episodes aired and an undisclosed number remaining, there is still ample opportunity for the series to introduce an engaging villain. However, should the tension fail to escalate, Dragon Ball Daima risks becoming what no fan wants to see – mundane and uninspiring.
