In the Dragon Quest 3 Remake, players embark on a quest to collect six colored orbs after obtaining three distinct keys. Unlike many contemporary RPGs that provide excessive guidance, this game presents a challenge in locating your objectives. Fortunately, players have the freedom to explore various approaches to accomplish their goals. This guide specifically addresses the quest for the Green Orb, found in the enigmatic town of Theddon.
Locating Theddon in Dragon Quest 3 Remake
After players acquire the Ship from the King of Portoga, they gain the ability to navigate the seas, unlocking a plethora of new locations, including the town of Theddon. To reach it, you can depart from Baharata or the Wayfarer’s Shrine, the latter being much more convenient, situated on the coastal strip west of Ibis.
If you haven’t visited the Shrine yet, set sail westward from Baharata. You should spot a quest marker (if enabled) at the southern edge of the western continent, directly south of the mountains near Ibis. To access Theddon, maneuver around the southern tip and steer towards the river inlet along the southwestern coastline. Theddon resides at the end of this river on a small peninsula.
Solving the Theddon Jail Cell Puzzle in Dragon Quest 3 Remake
Many players will discover Theddon early in their adventure yet remain puzzled by the seemingly inaccessible jail cell. Initially, it cannot be entered until you obtain the Ultimate Key from the game. Make sure to acquire this key before attempting to retrieve the Green Orb.
In Theddon, you will encounter various intriguing items, including the Night Light, which plays a key role in solving the jail cell puzzle. This item can be discovered in a chest located upstairs from the Equipment Shop, but only during daylight hours. At night, the locals appear as skeletons, making exploration quite different depending on the time of day. The Night Light enables you to toggle between day and night at will.
As you explore Theddon, you’ll see a dilapidated jail cell at the town’s northern edge. During nighttime, it is guarded, and a prisoner inside will show a quest marker above him. However, during the day, you can access the cell through a gap previously blocked by the guard, revealing a skeleton prisoner, which is why acquiring the Ultimate Key is essential.
Once you possess the Ultimate Key, return to Theddon. If it’s daytime, leave the town and use the Night Light (or the Tick Tock spell) to switch to night. Return to the jail cell and engage with the prisoner. He will attempt to offer you the Green Orb but will be immediately interrupted by an ominous voice, which turns out to belong to Dying Fire—a formidable enemy boss you must confront.
Strategies to Defeat Dying Fire in Dragon Quest 3 Remake
Dying Fire presents a unique challenge, primarily because it can create duplicates of itself. Additionally, you’ll face several Phantasms, which are elevated versions of Shades. Fortunately, both types of enemies have weaknesses that can be successfully exploited, especially if you’re adequately leveled up.
The Dying Fire is particularly susceptible to Zap spells. If you have access to Zapple, you can quickly dispatch a single Dying Fire. If you manage to secure Kazap, the battle can become significantly easier. Use your Hero to target the Dying Fires with Zap variations while letting the rest of your party focus on the Phantasms first.
The Phantasms are weak to Crack spells. If your Mage and Sage have learned Kacrack before this encounter, they can effortlessly deal with the Phantasms. Ideally, deploy one caster to continuously attack them with ice spells while the other alternates between dealing damage and providing healing support. Although the Dying Fires themselves are not weak to Crack, they are not resistant to it, making it advisable to use Kacrack against them as well.
Be sure to equip gear that mitigates the effects of instant-kill spells, as Dying Fire frequently casts Whack. When faced with multiple Dying Fires, the risk of falling victim to this attack increases significantly.
Upon proving victorious in the battle, players will receive the coveted Green Orb. If this is your first orb acquisition, consider proceeding to collect the Red Orb next, followed by the Blue Orb for a balanced progression.
