Warning: Contains SPOILERS for All-New Venom #1
The aftermath of the Venom War has left major upheaval in its wake. Eddie Brock, more widely known as Venom, has vanished, leaving his son, Dylan Brock, alone and without a symbiote. This latest abandonment adds to the many hardships Dylan has faced in his young life. Now, with his father missing and observing Venom gleefully swinging around New York with a new host, Dylan is left grappling with feelings of rage and rejection.
While Venom seems to be thriving and battle-ready alongside his new partner, Dylan is filled with fury and is determined to uncover the identity of Venom’s new host. This situation is precarious for Venom since Marvel has already hinted at the potential for Dylan to transform into a formidable adversary.
The Cycle of Abandonment Fuels Dylan’s Fury
Dylan’s journey of rejection is not a new narrative; it traces back to his infancy when his mother left him. Following his mother’s abandonment, his grandfather, who took him in, tragically took his own life. The moment Eddie entered Dylan’s life promised hope, but it was short-lived as Eddie disappeared during his tumultuous battles, including the infamous King in Black saga. Even as Venom, Eddie has previously distanced himself from Dylan, believing that cutting ties would protect his son from the perilous consequences linked with the symbiote. All of these experiences have profoundly scarred Dylan, leaving him feeling isolated and angry.
For now, Mary Jane Watson and her partner, Paul Rabin, have offered Dylan a place to stay, providing a much-needed sense of stability. However, despite this shelter, Dylan’s rage continues to bubble beneath the surface. Lacking immediate resources to take action against those who have wronged him, he must contend with the reality that his unique symbiotic abilities are currently dormant without a symbiote to bond with. Complicating matters further is Alchemax’s intervention in the aftermath of the Venom War, removing potential allies for Dylan.
Dylan’s Power: An Untapped Resource
Eddie Brock’s Legacy
Despite feeling isolated, Dylan retains the potential of a Prince in Black—an heir to both Knull and Eddie Brock’s legacies. Although the Living Abyss has been eradicated from him, Dylan’s intrinsic connection to the symbiotes remains active. This grants him the ability to locate and command symbiotes, suggesting that it’s only a matter of time before he finds a new bond. Once that bond is formed, Dylan Brock will re-emerge as Codex, a symbiote deity capable of fundamentally influencing the existence of all symbiotes. With unparalleled abilities combined with the fury of a teenager abandoned by his father, Dylan embodies a dire threat.
As the new host of Venom is likely unaware, they may soon face the wrath of Dylan Brock as he embarks on a path of villainy fueled by a deep sense of betrayal and abandonment.
The latest installment, All-New Venom #1, is now available from Marvel Comics.
