Attention, fans of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World—get excited! Michael Cera, who portrayed the iconic Scott Pilgrim in Edgar Wright’s renowned film, is reuniting with the director for a new project. This time, they’re set to adapt a Stephen King classic: The Running Man.
According to an exclusive report from The Hollywood Reporter, Cera is joining the cast of the film led by Glen Powell, alongside Emilia Jones from Coda and Cat Person. Cera will take on the role of a rebel trying to aid Powell’s character, Ben Richards, in surviving the deadly game he has chosen to play, while Jones will portray a wealthy woman oblivious to her grim reality.
Published under King’s pseudonym Richard Bachman, The Running Man was adapted into a film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger back in 1987. Edgar Wright is not only directing but also co-writing the script with Michael Bacall, aiming for a more faithful representation of King’s narrative. The film’s ensemble continues to grow, featuring notable talents including Josh Brolin as the main antagonist overseeing the game, and Lee Pace, who plays a relentless game hunter tracking down Ben Richards. Katy O’Brian will also appear as a fellow contestant in this high-stakes environment.
The recent announcement of Jayme Lawson joining the cast as Sheila Richards, Powell’s wife and mother to their ailing daughter, adds emotional depth. Ben, desperate to secure medical care for his sick child, volunteers for the lethal game show, where contestants are hunted down.
The reunion of Wright and Cera is certainly thrilling, especially after their collaboration on Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, an anime series where Wright served as an executive producer and Cera reprised his role as Scott through voice acting.
A Highly Anticipated Reunion
Since the debut of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World in 2010, audiences have developed a fondness for the joint efforts of Wright and Cera. As a fan of the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, I was eager for another project showcasing Wright’s brilliance. While he frequently collaborates with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, his partnerships with Cera have been rarer, making this announcement particularly thrilling!
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World enjoys a dedicated fanbase, having grown into a cult sensation based on the graphic novel series. With admirers clamoring for more from this beloved cast, this reunion was bound to happen eventually. The prospect of Cera stepping into a role within a Stephen King narrative only adds to the excitement.
I am also incredibly enthusiastic about Jones’ character in this film. She consistently delivers outstanding performances, and this role appears to represent a new direction for her. Whatever Edgar Wright has planned for The Running Man, I can hardly wait! It’s the movie I’ve been most looking forward to lately, and every new casting detail is thrilling. Who knows what’s next? Will we see Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Simon Pegg making a surprise appearance?
