Elden Ring Feature Not Returning in Nightreign: What Players Need to Know

The popular messaging system seen in the original Elden Ring will not be included in the upcoming title, Nightreign. Known for its humorous and occasionally helpful notes left by players, this feature allowed adventurers to share tips or mischief, such as warnings for impending dangers or amusing quips. These messages were randomly visible to other players, adding a layer of community interaction in a primarily solo gameplay experience, where newcomers could benefit from hints about lurking foes or traps like falling boulders.

Although many elements from the original game will return, including the beloved sites of grace and visibility of other players’ ghosts, the developers have stated, during a discussion with IGN Japan, that the removal of player messages is a deliberate design choice.

In a recent interview with IGN Japan, director Junya Ishizaki articulated the rationale for this change:

You can still see the ghosts of other players, but the ability to leave messages has been removed.

The design of Elden Ring Nightreign emphasizes shorter gameplay experiences, consisting of three-day sessions that encapsulate the highs and lows typical of RPGs. Ishizaki shared that the aim was to create a “condensed RPG”experience inspired by the fast-paced nature of speedrunning. This new format will feature eight distinct boss battles, culminating in a final showdown closely tied to the overarching narrative.

Reactions to the Message Removal

Humor and Community Engagement in Player Messages

Elden Ring Messages

Players familiar with the expansive landscapes of Elden Ring will recall the numerous messages scattered throughout, particularly before boss encounters. Many players found value in these notes, receiving cautious alerts about dangers or simply enjoying the comedic relief they provided. Personally, I encountered a particularly funny note that humorously warned, “You’re about to get crushed.. GGs,”just moments before a boulder tumbled from a hill and right onto my character.

While the removal of this feature may be contentious among fans, the developers’ logic behind this decision aligns with their vision of blending familiar elements from the original game with fresh, streamlined mechanics. Currently, no specific release date has been announced for Elden Ring Nightreign, but it is slated for late 2025. Anticipation continues to build, especially with the engaging trailers that suggest Nightreign will offer an experience that rivals both the original game and the acclaimed DLC, Shadow of the Erd Tree.
