Emma D’Arcy Requests One Key Rhaenyra Change for House of the Dragon Season 3: “It’s Getting Ridiculous”

House of the Dragon star Emma D’Arcy has voiced a desire for a significant addition to their character Rhaenyra in the upcoming third season of the HBO fantasy series. This show, a prequel to the iconic Game of Thrones and based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, debuted in 2022 and explores the early stages of the Targaryen civil war. With the recent confirmation of season 3’s development—alongside a planned fourth season—viewers can expect Rhaenyra and her allies to gear up for impending warfare against the factions within the Red Keep.

In a captivating discussion on the Happy Sad Confused podcast hosted by Josh Horowitz, D’Arcy shared their hopes for Rhaenyra’s evolution, specifically requesting that her character should wield a weapon. They expressed a tinge of envy over the male characters who dominate the series with their swords and other armaments. Here is a direct quote from D’Arcy:

“The petition I’ve put in is I want a weapon. Like it’s getting ridiculous. I don’t even mind if it’s like a little dagger, a short sword. I don’t really care. All the men in the show don’t have to worry about where they put their hands because they’re constantly holding the pommel of their sword. That obviously sounds like innuendo, and you can do with that what you will, but that is true. And all the rest of us are going, ‘Where do we put our f–king hands?’”

“Anyway, next year one hand is going to be taken care of. That’s what I want. I want a sword, and I’ve been really clear about that with Ryan, and I think that’s happening.”

What D’Arcy’s Comment Signifies for Rhaenyra in House of the Dragon Season 3

Given the dramatic conclusion of season 2, it seems only fitting for Rhaenyra to brandish a sword as the narrative progresses. The finale featured a pivotal secret meeting between Rhaenyra and Alicent (played by Olivia Cooke), where they struck an uneasy agreement to spare certain children in the event of Rhaenyra’s successful claim over the Red Keep. As the season wraps, Rhaenyra is poised for battle, rallying her forces, including the stalwart Prince Daemon (Matt Smith).

If the storyline escalates to a conflict in King’s Landing in season 3, it aligns perfectly with Rhaenyra’s character development to be portrayed in a more combative light. Although much of her conflict may occur from the back of her dragon, Syrax, a sword remains a quintessential part of a warrior’s armament. While audience reactions to season 2 were generally positive, the unfolding conflict between factions threatens to heat up significantly in the next installment, transitioning into full-scale warfare.

Our Perspective on D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra Weapon Request for House of the Dragon Season 3

D’Arcy has emerged as a standout performer in House of the Dragon, yet their portrayal of Rhaenyra in season 2 sometimes felt subdued. A more dynamic and physically engaged Rhaenyra taking charge in season 3 would undeniably enrich the narrative. As the plot unfolds, it appears highly probable that viewers will witness a more formidable and armed version of Rhaenyra in the forthcoming episodes.
