This series follows Agatha Harkness after the events in WandaVision. She remains ensnared within Wanda’s reality-warping spell until freed by Joe Locke’s character Teen (also known as Billy Maximoff). He urges her to traverse the legendary Witches’ Road, rumored to fulfill the desires of its travelers. Together, they enlist a coven of witches—Jennifer Kale, Lilia Calderu, Alice Wu-Gulliver, and Sharon Davis—to travel the path. However, members of their coven begin to be eliminated one by one as the season unfolds. The narrative culminates in the final two episodes of Agatha All Along.
In-depth Analysis of Agatha All Along Episodes 8 and 9
Confrontation with Death
In the seventh episode, viewers discover that Aubrey Plaza’s character, Rio Vidal, is indeed Marvel’s Lady Death. This revelation leads into Episode 8, where Agatha and Death face off. Death identifies Billy as an affront to the natural order due to his rebirth, creating an imbalance. Nonetheless, because Billy can reincarnate, Death can’t just take his life, leading Agatha to promise to persuade Billy to give himself up in exchange for her safety.
Eventually, after aiding Billy’s escape from the Witches’ Road, Agatha is confronted by Death for violating their agreement. Billy, now donned in his complete Wiccan outfit, returns to assist Agatha in battle. Death offers a choice: one must die while the other lives. Though Agatha initially intends to relinquish Billy, he reminds her of her son, Nicholas, prompting her to sacrifice herself instead with a kiss of Death.
The Truth Behind the Witches’ Road
The series Agatha All Along focuses heavily on the Witches’ Road journey, with new challenges emerging in each episode. By Episode 8, Agatha, Billy, and Jen find themselves back at the start of their journey, creating a sense of disorientation. They are transported to a morgue where each witch discovers a means to attain their desires: Jen performs an unbinding spell for herself, Billy locates his brother’s soul to inhabit a new body, and Agatha completes her challenge.
Debunking the Witches’ Road
It turns out that traversing the Witches’ Road was unnecessary for obtaining their desires, as the entire premise was fabricated. A flashback in Episode 9 reveals that the Witches’ Road story originated from a song Agatha and Nicholas crafted during their time on the road. The lyrics became popular, leading witches to seek out this mythical road. Agatha, having preyed on witches for their abilities, cleverly exploited this myth to lure them into her trap, ultimately stealing their powers under the guise of guiding them.
Interestingly, Billy Maximoff shares a similar nature to his mother, able to fabricate an illusion of the Witches’ Road powered by his magic. Thus, while he was responsible for the demise of Lilia, Sharon, and Alice, Agatha justified that his spell inadvertently saved Jen’s life.
Nicholas Scratch’s Fate
The ultimate fate of Nicholas Scratch is unveiled in the finale of Agatha All Along. When he was born back in 1750, Death came to collect him. Agatha pleaded for his life, and while Death consented, she warned that one day she would return. After some time, Nicholas fell ill, and that fateful night, Death came to claim him, which devastated Agatha. This event catalyzed Agatha’s resentment toward Death throughout the series. As Death explained, her responsibility is upholding the natural order, which necessitated Nicholas’ removal.
Does Agatha Meet Her End?
While Agatha does relinquish herself to Death in Episode 8, she does not vanish for long. By Episode 9, she reappears as a ghost to accompany Billy. Billy attempts to banish her with her locket, but Agatha admits her fear of facing Nicholas in the afterlife. He requests that she guide him, leading both of them on a journey to locate his brother, Tommy.
The whereabouts of Tommy Maximoff
After it is revealed that Billy Maximoff was reincarnated into a new body post-WandaVision, fans wonder about Tommy’s fate. Agatha All Along clarifies that Tommy’s soul didn’t find another vessel like Billy’s did. With his powers, Billy locates Tommy’s spirit and helps it inhabit the body of a young boy at risk of drowning. Although Billy doesn’t know the boy’s exact location, he senses the child’s loneliness and lack of love in his surroundings. This storyline may echo Tommy Shepherd’s comic origins, where he grapples with his powers amidst family problems and winds up in juvenile detention. By the time Billy finds him, Tommy could be in a challenging situation.
“He’s going to drown… It’s a dire circumstance. The environment is harsh. There’s no one to love him,”Billy reflects.
Possibility of Season 2 for Agatha All Along
Agatha All Along concludes on an ambiguous note, with Agatha and Billy setting off in search of Tommy Maximoff. While it’s plausible that Agatha could resurface in the MCU in her new spectral form, it appears this Disney+ series served as the finale to her individual narrative. A continuation of Billy’s journey seems more feasible in a Wiccan-centric series or potentially in Vision’s WandaVision sequel, Vision Quest.
Agatha All Along is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
