Everything We Know About DC’s Clayface Movie: Writer, Release Date, and More

DC Studios has made headlines by officially greenlighting a Clayface movie, marking an exciting development in the growing DC Universe portfolio. This project illustrates the studio’s commitment to honing in on characters that have not received ample attention in previous cinematic endeavors. As the franchise shifts gears with the anticipated Superman reboot, the inclusion of characters like Clayface, Booster Gold, and The Authority signals a daring approach that diverges from the traditional narratives seen in the former DCEU.

A solo film dedicated to Clayface presents a unique challenge for DC Studios. While he is a well-recognized villain within the Batman universe, his fame does not quite match that of iconic characters like the Joker. The latter’s recent standalone film faced significant backlash, underscoring the complexities involved in bringing lesser-known villains to the forefront. However, the success of projects centered around Batman’s rogues’ gallery, such as the critically acclaimed Penguin series, suggests a robust audience interest in these intriguing narratives.

Confirmation of DC’s Clayface Movie

James Gunn Confirms Clayface Has Been Greenlit

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn clarified that no project within the DCU is officially “in production”until the studio gives a formal greenlight. For instance, the forthcoming Paradise Lost series remains in limbo despite its announcement in January 2023. In a striking contrast, Gunn took to X to disclose the confirmation of Clayface, with Mike Flanagan at the helm as the writer and story developer.

Unlike recent Elseworlds titles such as Joker and The Batman, it has been confirmed that Clayface will be integrated into the official DC Universe continuity. This connection suggests that Clayface will intersect with the DCU’s upcoming version of Batman, who is anticipated to appear in The Brave and the Bold, although a release date for that project has yet to be announced. Interestingly, it seems plausible that Clayface’s narrative will unfold ahead of The Brave and the Bold’s debut, considering its release alignment with Gunn’s earlier statements.

Clayface is now among several DCU projects with a confirmed release date, even though it wasn’t part of Gunn’s original announcements. Following his social media update, Warner Bros. announced that the highly anticipated film will hit theaters on September 11, 2026. This places the film just after the release of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, scheduled for June 26, 2026, while also arriving weeks before Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II, set for October 2, 2026.

The release date confirmation coincided with the announcement of another project, Dynamic Duo, slated for June 30, 2028.

While there is ongoing speculation about the introduction of Batman in the DC Universe, details about The Brave and the Bold indicate a focus on the Bat Family, notably featuring Damian Wayne’s Robin. This suggests that the depiction of Bruce Wayne might differ substantially from that in The Batman – Part II. Moreover, it’s possible that the timing of Clayface’s release may aim to create a distinction between The Brave and the Bold and the Elseworlds franchise.

Fans Propose Mike Flanagan as Director

Though Mike Flanagan’s role as writer for Clayface was confirmed, a director for the film has yet to be appointed. Information shared by Brandon Davis on X, obtained from Peter Safran during a Q&A following the Superman presentation, reiterated that filming is set to commence “early next year,”aligning with the anticipated fall release in 2026. Additionally, Davis emphasized that Clayface will not be portrayed in a campy manner, drawing comparisons to DC’s interpretation of The Fly.

Flanagan’s proficiency in horror filmmaking has led to growing fan support for him to also take on the directing role. His notable works include films like Absentia and Gerald’s Game, where he acted as writer and producer. While fans have suggested other recognized horror directors, such as Sam Raimi, as potential candidates, DC Studios has not yet revealed its direction regarding the film’s directorial lineup.

Potential Casting for Clayface

Alan Tudyk: A Strong Contender for Clayface

Clayface in battle

Known for his bizarre and formidable persona, Clayface is a villain often depicted as a massive creature with a malleable, clay-like form, capable of shapeshifting. The character’s accurate representation in the animated Creature Commandos confirms that he will likely retain his grotesque design in a live-action adaptation, as the series falls under DCU’s canon. Consequently, actors skilled in motion capture and voice performances may be primary candidates for the live-action portrayal.

Alan Tudyk, celebrated for his voice acting prowess, voices Clayface in Creature Commandos and stands out as a formidable option for reprising the role in a live-action format. However, his involvement isn’t a certainty given that he also voices other characters, like Doctor Phosphorous and Will Magnus, in the animated series, raising questions about his capacity to embody all these roles concurrently.

Additionally, reports from Deadline suggest that Daniel Craig will headline a live-action Sgt. Rock film. If this production is part of the DCU, it reinforces that voice actors aren’t guaranteed to play the same characters in live-action adaptations, as seen with Maury Sterling’s voicing of Sgt. Rock in Creature Commandos. Nevertheless, the return of actors like Frank Grillo and Viola Davis to portray Rick Flag Sr. and Amanda Waller in both animated and live-action forms leaves the possibility open for Tudyk to don the role of Clayface on the big screen.

Insights into the Clayface Movie’s Narrative

Clayface Compared to David Cronenberg’s The Fly

Although specific story details remain undisclosed, Brandon Davis’ comparison of Clayface to David Cronenberg’s The Fly illuminates exciting narrative possibilities. The Fly, featuring Jeff Goldblum’s portrayal of a scientist’s eventual grotesque metamorphosis into a hybrid creature, lends a compelling lens to analyze Clayface’s character arc and origins. As DCU broadens its narrative scope, it remains to be seen how this horror-inflected approach will meld with an otherwise vibrant franchise.

Should Clayface transition into a full-fledged horror movie, it would demonstrate DC Studios’ willingness to venture into diverse genres, setting it apart from conventional superhero fare characterized by action and sci-fi themes. For comparison, while the MCU has often faced criticism for its formulaic storytelling, fan enthusiasm for experimentative projects like Werewolf by Night showcases a yearning for distinct narratives. Thus, if Clayface is approached through a horror lens, it may herald an exciting new direction for the DC cinematic universe.
