This year marks the launch of a brand-new Dungeons & Dragons pinball machine, which promises to capture the essence of this iconic tabletop game. Celebrating an impressive 50 years, the D&D franchise has embraced various collaborations and revealed extensive updates to its Fifth Edition rulebooks. The festivities continue into 2025 with the upcoming Monster Manual set for release in February alongside various intriguing announcements.

Stern Pinball, a leader in producing themed pinball machines, has unveiled Dungeons & Dragons: The Tyrant’s Eye, a machine that incorporates a stunning array of features including an animatronic mech red dragon. Fans can look forward to experiencing voice performances from an impressive lineup that includes Michael Dorn, Kevin Smith, Luke Gygax, Chris Prynoski, Brendon Small, Gerard Way, Matthew Mercer, Laura Bailey, and Marisha Ray. The gameplay not only includes character creation and an engaging storyline but also the option to unlock items with in-game gold and choose paths that significantly influence the gameplay. This isn’t the first time a Dungeons & Dragons-themed pinball machine has been released; Bally Manufacturing launched a D&D pinball in 1987, featuring art by Larry Elmore from the iconic Red Box. However, The Tyrant’s Eye introduces a range of innovative features alongside classic pinball mechanics such as ramps, targets, and bumpers. Notably, the game incorporates a save function through Stern’s Insider Connected system, allowing players to persist their campaigns and progress with the same character over multiple sessions.

The Tyrant’s Eye also integrates a new narrative arc, presenting Tiamat, the Dragon Queen, as she seeks to escape her abyssal confinement. Players will square off against notable adversaries like Xanathar, the beholder, and Sammaster, the lich, as well as Rath the Ruthless, a red dragon who becomes even more dangerous when enraged by shooting multiple pinballs. The pinball machine will be sold in three distinct versions, with prices ranging from $6,999 to $12,999 depending on the model.

The advancements in pinball technology are truly remarkable, and the latest Dungeons & Dragons pinball machine stands out as particularly impressive. Notably, players can engage in a campaign narrated by the renowned Matt Mercer, enriched further by the contributions from the esteemed cast of Critical Role and other celebrated names in the D&D community.

The character-saving feature that enables a consistent gameplay experience across sessions adds a delightful twist for players who enjoy a sustained narrative journey. It appears that while the Dungeons & Dragons brand is increasingly expanding, the game’s evolution has not kept pace, though this may change with Wizards of the Coast’s exciting 2025 publishing slate on the horizon.
