What To Expect In What If… Season 3?
Viewers are already aware that Season 3 will showcase captivating storylines such as a road trip adventure featuring Winter Soldier and Red Guardian, alongside an epic mech battle with a fresh Avengers lineup. Recently, some thrilling details emerged at the 2024 Lightbox Expo from X-Men ’97 and What If…? writer Matt Chauncey, hinting at a unique “1930s screwball musical”episode.
Although Chauncey did not reveal specifics about the characters involved in the musical or the overarching context, the inclusion of such an episode isn’t entirely unprecedented. Many established series have ventured into musical territory as a means of diversifying their content. Notable shows like Scrubs, Buffy, Psych, and Fringe have also embraced musical segments, making it an intriguing direction for this animated series as well. The potential of concluding the series with a musical is a creative and engaging touch.
In addition to the musical episode revelation, Chauncey teased that at least one character exclusive to the series—never seen prior in comics—will make an appearance this season. Additionally, a previously existing character, who did not show up in Seasons 1 or 2, will join the fray in Season 3. Although the identity of this character remains a mystery, it was hinted that Moon Knight might be making his debut, though it’s unclear if he was specifically mentioned by Chauncey during his talk.
As What If…? prepares to conclude its run, it is also extending into new mediums, including an exciting Apple Vision Pro exclusive VR experience that immerses users into the animated Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans won’t have to wait much longer for the musical episode, which is slated to premiere on Disney+ in 2025.
