Exclusive: ‘Archaic’ Explores a Non-Nuclear Family in a Mythical Mystery

Today, The Mary Sue is excited to announce the upcoming release of a new fantasy action-adventure series from Ahoy Comics, titled Archaic, set to launch this December.

Single mothers encounter numerous challenges when raising their children, and those difficulties multiply when they are faced with mythical beings and divine interventions. The premise suggests an intriguing blend of Percy Jackson meets Fleabag, and we are thrilled to embark on this eccentric adventure.

Tess inherits a mansion, a trust fund, and a promise of unwavering protection, especially appealing after her ex-husband makes a grave error by robbing the wrong individuals.

However, Demonde is far from a tranquil escape. For starters, it is a sentient island. Furthermore, it requires a human trustee to interact with retired deities and mythical beings now that Tess’s father has passed. Upon her arrival, she learns from the island’s duplicitous butler and a goddess of the underworld that she is bound to the island by blood for eternity. The key to her liberation lies in locating her father’s murderer, but success is not guaranteed.

“This is the first complete comic book I’ve created, but surprisingly, it’s also the most intimate narrative I’ve ever crafted,” Olson shared. “During the COVID lockdowns, many of us felt compelled to reassess our roles in the world, myself included. What does it mean to be employed, to parent, and to find purpose? How do I shield my children from the vast uncertainties beyond my control?”

“These are profound questions, and the more I contemplated them, the more I felt drawn to write about a character navigating similar dilemmas in a fantastically unique setting. I’m incredibly grateful to have collaborated with Sally, the top-tier monster artist, and I feel honored that AHOY chose to bring this story to life with us,” she continued.

Artist Sally Cantirino expressed, “Melissa has crafted a fantastic story with Archaic—it captivated me from the moment I read the proposal. Embarking on a new chapter in life can be intimidating, as can confronting the metaphorical monsters stemming from our past or our ancestry. Tess, Teo, Aubrey, and Liam engage in their adventure with a commendable mix of bravery and curiosity. I couldn’t wait to delve into the world and uncover the secrets of the island alongside Tess and her family. Collaborating closely with Melissa to illustrate the island and its inhabitants was both enjoyable and fulfilling, and Gab’s coloring truly breathes life into it all.”

“I absolutely adore the entire concept of this comic,” remarked Ahoy Senior Editor Sarah Litt. “Where do the Old Gods retire? Melissa executes every element brilliantly. Sally’s illustrations, coupled with Gab’s vibrant colors, truly bring this narrative to life. Our collaboration has been extraordinary, and I feel incredibly fortunate when everything aligns so perfectly.”

Archaic #1 is set to release at your local comic book retailer on December 4.
