Exclusive: ‘FML’ Series Created by ‘Captain Marvel’ Team Brings Relatable Storylines

Renowned for their work on Captain Marvel, writer Kelly Sue DeConnick and artist David López are joining forces once again to create a new eight-issue comic series published by Dark Horse Comics.

Featuring colors by Cris Peter and lettering by Clayton Cowles, FML is a magical realism tale centered around a group of heavy metal teenagers in Portland, Oregon. This series explores their unique capacity to cope with real-life tragedies such as school shootings and raging wildfires, all while navigating the complexities of chaos magic—or are they?

FML marks DeConnick’s return to independent comics after the hiatus of Bitch Planet in 2017. In a recent statement, she expressed, “David and I have discussed creating something together since our time on Captain Marvel, but it took years for the universe and our schedules to align. This moment feels predestined, as we required this time for personal and artistic growth before reuniting for this ambitious project.”

She added:

“FML is a complex book—both stylistically and thematically—and I doubt we could have executed it successfully five years ago. Yet here we are, and I am incredibly proud of what the entire team has accomplished. David’s artwork radiates passion, Cris masterfully blends various styles using her color palette, while Clayton, our hidden gem, crafts lettering that ensures every thought resonates as intended. … For me, FML shares the personal intensity of Pretty Deadly and the timely satire of Bitch Planet.”

The inaugural issue of FML introduces us to 16-year-old Riley, an avid fan of monster movies, his music band, and sketching his dreams of a heavy metal future. Unfortunately, his dark drawings raise concerns among his teachers, and his former Riot Grrrl mother, who is obsessed with true crime, struggles to meet the needs of Riley and his goth sister amidst escalating global issues like ash falling from the skies.

Riley finds temporary refuge at the Forest Park Witch’s House with his friends, each battling their own demons, but what he discovers in the eerie old residence is far more profound.
