Fallout 76 has evolved significantly since it first entered the gaming landscape in November 2018. Through continuous updates, the game has introduced new non-playable characters (NPCs), engaging questlines, an array of weapons, Vault raids, an expanded game map, and exciting Expeditions that transport players to cherished settings within the Fallout universe. The recent Gleaming Depths update has further enriched the experience by unveiling a multi-stage raid and rewarding players with coveted 4-Star Legendary gear upon its completion.
Yet, the development journey for Fallout 76 remains ongoing. Game Rant recently had an in-depth discussion with the game’s production director, Bill LaCoste, who has been an integral part of the project since 2019. During the past five years, LaCoste and his dedicated team have implemented an impressive range of features and are poised to introduce a long-awaited option: the ability to play as a Ghoul. The following transcript has been edited for clarity and brevity.
Enhancing Player Experience: The Commitment to Ghouls
Q: What distinctive features can players expect when playing as a Ghoul?
A: One of the standout aspects is definitely the Glow meter, which allows Ghouls to harness radiation to power their abilities. This radiation usage is pivotal, enabling unique combat skills. In addition, we have the Feral meter, which substitutes for hunger and thirst, necessitating the use of Chems and radiated food to manage it. There are several modifications and exciting perks associated with this feature.
Q: Can you share your favorite ability linked to the Glow meter?
A: Interestingly, since we are in pre-alpha, we haven’t quite formed any favorites at this stage. However, we are working on a variety of abilities that boost melee damage, ranged damage, and enhance Glow regeneration. Currently, we are exploring diverse loadouts for our characters. Personally, I have a Bloody character, and I’ll have to adapt that play style for the Ghoul gameplay. The anticipation of discovering strategies not only from our team but also from the community is exhilarating—our players know the game exceedingly well!
Q: Have you started testing the Ghoul mechanics in raids or operations?
A: Not extensively yet. However, as a team, we are just beginning our experience with the Ghoul playstyle. We’ll evaluate this during raids and daily operations, and there are definite scenarios where Ghouls will excel, particularly during events like Rad Rumble where they can easily collect resources. It’s an intriguing process as we’re introducing a fresh system to our player base, which is equally new to us.
Q: Is the team enjoying the development process, particularly with the new features?
A: Absolutely! Our enthusiasm for the future of Fallout 76 is palpable, especially regarding the player Ghoul system. We want this experience to feel authentic; starting simply with a cosmetic outfit wouldn’t reflect the essence of being a Ghoul. We aim to deliver a truly immersive experience that resonates with the themes of survival in the wasteland, and I believe we are achieving that goal effectively.
The Impact of Fallout 76’s Community
Q: Do you have a memorable community moment that stands out to you?
A: One of my favorites is the initiative by the Chad: Fallout 76 podcast, especially Ken Vigue’s team and streamers like Wreck It Renee during the Fallout For Hope event, which raises funds for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Their ability to collaboratively design float parades in-game on Fallout Day (October 23) exemplifies the power of our community. It’s a joyous occasion that unites us all.
Q: Since joining the team pre-Wastelanders, which project has been your favorite to work on?
A: For me, Wastelanders stands as a watershed moment in the game’s evolution. Prior to this expansion, players learned about the history of Appalachia through terminals and holotapes, but Wastelanders brought life back to the setting. It set a benchmark for all subsequent updates and has profoundly influenced the game’s storytelling and engagement.
Insights from Bill LaCoste on Fallout’s Legacy
Q: What achievements are you most proud of during your tenure on Fallout 76?
A: My pride is less about individual accomplishments and more about what our team has achieved together. Collaboration is at the heart of our process, as we playtest and explore methods for enhancing gameplay and our internal operations. I’m particularly proud of significant features like public teams and area looting, but it’s the collective effort and evolution driven by community feedback that stands out most to me.
Q: If given the chance, which Bethesda project would you want to work on?
A: Without a doubt, it would be Fallout. My journey began with Fallout 1, which captured my interest during its initial launch. Experiencing the immersive world of Fallout 3 was monumental; stepping into a vibrant 3D landscape was transformative, and that “stepping out” moment has always been iconic in Bethesda games for me.
Q: Do you have a favorite moment in Bethesda games when exploring the world?
A: For me, it happens during Fallout 3 when you first step out into the breathtaking vistas. The freedom to explore at will was nothing short of remarkable.
