EXCLUSIVE: Meghan Buchanan Discusses Overcoming Challenges in Her Outlast Journey

Outlast, the popular Netflix reality TV survival competition series, recently concluded its second season with the finale airing on September 11, 2024. This season saw Team Bravo emerge victorious, with contestants Drake and Drew taking home the grand prize of $1 million. Sixteen contestants were divided into groups of four, facing the harsh winter conditions of Alaska while lacking basic necessities.

Throughout the season, each team on Outlast encountered a variety of challenges, including the search for food and maintaining warmth at night. Notably, Team Charlie faced significant hurdles, leading to two of their teammates opting to shoot a flare and withdraw from the competition.

In Outlast Season 2 Episode 3, contestant Meghan Buchanan had to call for medics due to serious frostbite, having consumed only 250 calories over the course of eight days. Meanwhile, her teammate Julio experienced spasms requiring immediate assistance.

Meghan shared how her positive mindset and optimistic approach to the game, along with Team Charlie’s strategic dynamics, were instrumental in their performance. Reflecting on her experience in Alaska, she evaluated her team’s strengths, weaknesses, and the challenges they faced.

The adventure athlete discussed her decision to shoot the flare and Bri’s exit from the competition. She emphasized the importance of mental preparation before entering the survival challenge of Outlast. She stated:

“I knew that I was mentally prepared for really difficult challenges, prepared to take on things never done before.”

Meghan Buchanan Reflects on Her Experience in Outlast Season 2

Q. How did you prepare for the Outlast competition, knowing you’d lack basic necessities like food and shelter?

That’s a great question! By the time I confirmed my participation, I had limited time for preparation. I focused on studying plants in the area and foraging techniques.

Additionally, I live near Survival University in Colorado, where I spent three days refining my skills, especially in starting a fire. Although I knew I wasn’t a seasoned survivalist, I mentally prepared to handle whatever challenges arose.

Q. What was your mindset going into Outlast? You maintained a positive attitude throughout the game. How did you achieve that?

Staying optimistic has propelled my success with the Seven Summits and beyond. I adhere to principles such as gratitude, resilience, and tenacity, which help me navigate challenges effectively.

It’s crucial to maintain a positive outlook, as negativity can influence the entire team dynamic. Through practice, you cultivate positivity that directs energy towards solutions.

Q. Was the never-give-up attitude a significant factor for Team Charlie on Outlast? Did you contribute to this mindset?

I believe so, and I think my teammates embodied that spirit as well. If even one person can stay positive, it can uplift the entire team.

Q. After watching Outlast Season 2, what do you see as your team’s weaknesses?

Our location, Team Charlie’s camp, was less resource-rich compared to others. We faced severe wind conditions, lacked edible mushrooms, and had scarce firewood, making it challenging to maintain warmth and light at night.

Q. What motivated you to join Outlast Season 2? Did you watch the previous season?

I had seen the first season and was approached by the casting agency. I thrive on new challenges and I’m not afraid to step into unfamiliar territory. The chance to learn and grow excites me, regardless of the potential difficulties.

Q. How did your perspective change from the start of Outlast to your departure?

I left with a greater appreciation for all aspects of the experience, including the incredible professionalism of the crew. I developed a deeper interest in survival skills and profound respect for those who live off the land.

Q. If Netflix proposed an Outlast spinoff, would you be interested in participating?

Absolutely! Even after I was eliminated, I expressed my desire to join a redemption show. It was an incredible experience that forged lasting bonds with my castmates, and I would eagerly participate in a spinoff.

Q. What major lesson did you learn from Outlast?

Starting mountaineering in my late 20s and now at 50, I’ve learned the importance of making sound decisions. In my younger years, my stubbornness might’ve led me to stay until physically forced out, but now I understand the value of choosing to seek help when needed. I’m proud of this growth.

Q. You mentioned micromanaging issues within Team Charlie. Was this a reason for your struggles?

Yes, that’s part of it. None of us were survival experts, and without a clear leader, it was difficult to agree on priorities. While we worked together quickly, the challenging environment also contributed to our difficulties.

Q. How did you react to Bri’s departure from the competition?

When Bri left, I wasn’t shocked as we had discussed her strategy in advance. I immediately shifted into problem-solving mode, focusing on how the remaining three of us could tackle the challenges ahead.

Ultimately, it’s important to remember that this is a reality competition, and Bri made her choices, which I respect.

Q. Are you still in touch with your fellow Outlast cast members? Who are you closest to now?

Yes, we have a group text with all 16 cast members that we’re active in daily. I’ve grown particularly close to Emily, who also resides in Colorado, and I’ve maintained contact with Julio and Joey. I’ve also built strong connections with Tina and Tonia, creating a separate group just for us ladies.

Q. What advice would you give the audience? How do you maintain a positive mindset?

Life presents continuous obstacles, and it’s crucial to reframe them as goals. Take ownership of your situation and focus on moving forward, even when you feel like giving up. Every step forward counts.

Don’t miss Outlast Season 2, available on Netflix.
