An Exclusive Interview with Mark Morse from Spin Master
Meet Mark Morse: Vice President of Marketing for Wheels & Action at Spin Master
Rob Keyes: What did the process entail for creating the intricately designed Batmobile from Batman Forever?
Mark Morse: Each Batmobile presents unique challenges, not only regarding aesthetics but also functionality. Replicating a design requires engineering features that align with the established silhouette while ensuring compatibility with our action figures. While we faced some challenges, they were consistent across our endeavors—both previous and current models like the 1989 Batmobile and the Tumbler have their own intricacies.
How has your perspective changed about Batman Forever three decades post-release?
Mark Morse: I was initially eager for Batman Forever, coming from the hugely popular Tim Burton/Michael Keaton films. While I hoped for an inherently darker tone, what I encountered was something unexpectedly vibrant and exaggerated, diverging from my expectations. Though I appreciate its unique style today, I recognize it surprised many fans looking for continuity with its predecessors. However, its immense success resonated particularly with a younger audience, amplifying the ongoing appeal of associated memorabilia.
What motivated you to adapt Batman Forever icons and their vehicles?
Mark Morse: Our collaboration with retail buyers plays a crucial role in shaping nostalgic product lines. The Target buyer, recalling fond memories of the original Batman Forever toy line, expressed a deep desire to revive that joy. I’ve always championed retro-themed toys, and this collaboration expands beyond just Batman Forever—it opens the door for celebrating a wider array of beloved DC properties. Our partners at Warner Bros. have been incredibly supportive of this initiative.
What challenges did you face in the design of the Batman Forever Retro Collection?
Mark Morse: Capturing the aesthetic authenticity of the 90s was paramount. Each decade brought distinct design philosophies and manufacturing techniques. Our goal was to ensure our products appeal to modern standards without losing the nostalgic essence of earlier eras. By incorporating authentic details reminiscent of those bygone days, we hope to create items that feel as if they belonged on shelves decades ago.
Is there an aspect of Batman Forever or the DC franchise you wish to adapt but haven’t yet?
Mark Morse: The creative freedom we’ve been granted allows us to explore unfulfilled potentials in the toy market. Some classic films lacked proper toy lines at launch, while others have since been modernized. Our initiative allows us to review those missed opportunities and accurately recreate toys as if they had been designed in their era. In fact, we are currently working on a project revolving around a significant character from 1978, coinciding with its reboot next summer, which will culminate in a complementary series celebrating both the past and the present.
Thank you, Mark!
