Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Blue Bloods series finale. The iconic long-running series Blue Bloods has reached its conclusion after a remarkable 14-year journey, leaving fans with an emotional farewell to the Reagan family. Despite some discontent regarding CBS’s decision to end the beloved cop drama, the finale provided significant character development, particularly for Danny Reagan. This progression was notably influenced by actor Donnie Wahlberg, who passionately advocated for key aspects of his character’s storyline.
In a recent interview with Variety, Wahlberg shared insights on his dialogue with show producers about advancing Danny’s relationship with Baez. While he wasn’t necessarily pushing for a romantic connection, he aimed for their partnership to indicate potential future developments. He emphasized that his pivotal scene with Len Cariou, portraying Henry, highlighted the necessity for Danny to evolve and embrace Baez more deeply. Below, he provides his thoughts on the matter:
“It was important to [producer] Kevin Wade to not have every partnership turn into a relationship. And I respected that, and I agreed with it. I think it was just probably important for me personally that Danny grows. As the audience started sort of clamoring for a relationship with Danny and Baez, I thought, it’s more important for them to grow and for her to start making an impact on him, and him to really respect her in a way that he hasn’t always respected certain people in the show.”
“I think that was a lot of me really pushing. I pushed a lot for some closure with that. I went to [writer] Siobhan O’Connor, and I was like, ‘Listen, you’ve got to do something. They don’t need to go get married, but something would be nice, just to show that there may be a future for them, or that their relationship has really evolved.’
“I did the scene with Len, and it was just gold. You understand he’s taking Grandpa’s advice. And I thought it was done magically. I thought it was done with respect to the show. It wasn’t ‘Let’s tie this up with a nice bow.’ It’s just a little nod to what could happen in the future for them.”
Why It Took So Long For Danny & Baez To Get Together
Linda’s Impact on Danny’s Character Journey
Throughout the early seasons of Blue Bloods, Danny’s character was intricately linked to his late wife, Linda, with whom he shared a loving family. This dynamic dramatically shifted with Linda’s tragic death, leaving Danny and their children to grapple with overwhelming grief. While the rest of the Reagan family gradually began moving forward, Danny remained steadfast in his commitment to work, often sidelining any personal growth or potential relationships. This backdrop makes his eventual recognition of a possible future with Baez all the more meaningful, especially after receiving crucial advice from his grandfather.
Though the idea of Danny and Baez forming a romantic relationship may divide long-time fans, it’s essential to recognize that their connection was expected to deepen over time. Many viewers have long theorized about their potential romance, especially considering the strong partnership they built amid the series’ tumultuous events. It’s clear that Baez represents a profound opportunity for Danny to heal and rebuild after his wife’s passing.
