Explained: The Relationship Between Arwen and Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings

Galadriel is a central figure in both The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and the broader lore of The Lord of the Rings. As one of the most esteemed elves of Middle-earth, she is renowned for possessing Nenya, one of the powerful Rings of Power. A significant relationship exists between Galadriel and Arwen, Queen of the Reunited Kingdom, as they are directly related. Arwen, known as the Evenstar, is a half-elf who ascends to royalty through her marriage to King Aragorn, showcasing a timeless, epic romance that transcends generations.

Despite the vast time span between their lives, Arwen and Galadriel are closely linked through their lineage. Arwen is the daughter of Celebrían, who is Galadriel’s daughter. Unlike her mother, Arwen is half-elven due to her father’s lineage. Both possess the gift of elven immortality, with Galadriel, a granddaughter of King Finwë, being one of the most pivotal figures among the Noldor. As the First Age concluded, Galadriel married Celeborn, an elven prince of Doriath, and they welcomed their daughter, Celebrían, about three hundred years into the Second Age. Celebrían eventually formed a bond with Elrond, the half-elf Lord of Rivendell, in 1301 of the Second Age. It’s interesting to note their friendly yet separate relationship in The Rings of Power, contrasting with their romantic connection in the later narratives. Elrond and Celebrían married in the Third Age and had three children together.

Celebrían and Elrond’s union led to the birth of their twin sons, Elladan and Elrohir, early in the Third Age. Arwen, however, was born later in 241 of the Third Age. Since Elrond possesses half-elven traits, his children, including Arwen, inherit this legacy while still enjoying the benefits of elven longevity.

In the timeline of Middle-earth, both Arwen and Galadriel are ancient beings, each boasting an age that spans thousands of years. However, pinpointing their exact ages during the events of The Lord of the Rings can be complex due to the varying calculations of time across different Ages. Galadriel was born in the Year of the Trees, specifically in 1362 of the First Age, about 300 years into that era. The calendar during this time did not align with the solar years we recognize today, as one Year of the Trees equates to approximately 9.582 solar years.

Following the creation of the Moon and the Sun in 1500, Year of the Trees, the calculation of time transitioned to solar years, placing Galadriel at about 1,322 years at that time. The remainder of the First Age brought her total age to roughly 1,912 by the end of that era. As the Second Age unfolded, which lasted for 3,441 solar years, Galadriel’s age extended to 5,353 years. When the events of The Lord of the Rings commenced in 3018 of the Third Age, Galadriel was about 8,371 years old, ultimately reaching 8,375 by the series’ conclusion.

In contrast, Arwen’s age is easier to calculate. Born in 241 of the Third Age, she was approximately 2,777 years old at the beginning of the trilogy and turned 2,780 by its conclusion in 3021. Following extensive adventures alongside Aragorn, Arwen ultimately chose to remain with him in Middle-earth, foregoing the elven journey to Aman, which led to her demise at the age of 2,901 in the Fourth Age.
